does anyone know if this pirticular radiator will work with my mav's 302 swap? A local guy offered it to me, he still has it new in the box and told me to just make an offer i havent made it out yet to take measurments of my core support, ect.. That's a small radiator, smaller than the 27x15.5 Griffin I used in my V8 Ranger, which by the way is about as small as you'd want. It does fine by itself, but no towing and no A/C. You'll need a reallt big fan too. I've got twin 12" inchers pulling and wish I had more, but no room for a big single.
match it to your ...stock radiator...that's the easy way to tell...also check the angle of the ...bottom neck... ...Frank...:Handshake
Like Frank said, that bottom outlet neck may have an odd angle. I ended up not being able to use the stock bottom hose, and had to buy one of those bendable aluminum hoses. My Griffin had it angled toward the center of the engine bay, not straight out like the stock one. Also, mine was 19X22. Any wider and I would have had to cut into the frame to make it fit at the bottom. my 19x22 griffin runs the 347 with 10.0:1 compression cool... same as scoops. and i got the bendable stainless hose as well. anyway... I dare you to run a big electric fan behind that 3" radiator, it will probably sit right up to the pulleys. I had a mustang pro line electric fan that was 4" overall and it wouldn't fit. you could get a thin line, but they dont push as much air. or go to a pusher, and still limited by the hood latch. It's a balance game.
i had to notch the frame and use a diffrent lower hose on my grif. Its little and I am in phoenix 122 degree summers with ac and a lead foot so I put a spal 1350 cfm with a $7 AC relay. Next problem the PWM (variable speed ) blew twice so i sent it back and put an alternatoe from an 85 ford 350 E Van 110Amp .MUST USE 350 e Voltage regulater with this. Sounds extreme but the space for the radiator was small and its hotter than the sun here. Theres nothing you cant throw enough money at and make it worse.
aluminum radiators are fine, but you gotta get one that fits. Mine is 19X22 and any bigger will require cutting into the frame rails, which most of us wont do. Mine is keeping my engine PLENTY cool, if not TOO cool.
I wish I could remember what car I got my fan off of. It just fits inside the tanks and just about completely covers the finned area. It looks a lot like the Taurus fan, but has just a bit smaller shroud, and the fan is centered in it. This picture shows temporary radiator mount. It is much better now. Also, ended up replacing that lower hose with the metal one. This was pretty much just a mockup when I was installing the radiator.
