Heys guys, long time no type. Just gave the engine on the mav a valve job, if you happen to recall about a month ago i blew the head gasket. So i figured it was a good deal to do it myself, and aside the machining o the heads it was pretty cheap and easy....buts anyways i got some more power outta her, but its still too weak. Shouldn't raw american iron win out over computers? I think so, but mine shore dont wanna. She's kinda sad to tell you the truth, so what can i do for more power? I have the 302 4 dr with a C-4 auto tran (which has 3 gears) and the stock rear. so i want to put headers and 4-barrel holley on, but i need the intake, which ain't cheap, but as far as the rest? The engine is Screaming at like 65 mph, so would a rear end (like a 3.55 er somthin?) make that worse? I know when i had my truck ('85 F-250 HD) it had a c-6 that has 5 gears - so would that help? what solutions do i have for that? Any advice would be appricated.
For a basically stock motor that you want to do some mild hop ups, I'd start with a good ignition. Your running points so get a Petronix set up or find a Duraspark set up in a junkyard and convert it. Next would be the exhaust. A set of headers connecting to 2 1/2" pipe with free flowing mufflers. After that, go with a 4 bbl set up. Lastly, worry about gears. Changing to higher ratio gears will help acceleration but will kill your top end. If this car is used alot on the highway, i wouldnt mess with gearing for now. Eventually, you might consider converting to an AOD. Then you can go with better gears. If the car is just a weekend play toy, then go ahead and get some better gears
I agree with what was said by mavaholic. Also a C6 is only a 3 speed also. You can get a decent manifold for around $100 bucks. Not a great one, but good for the street etc. Try a Wieand Xcellerator, or a Edelbrock Torker or something of that nature. Get a little better cam, etc... Maybe try an edelbrock power package. Runs around 400 to 500 bucks I think, and brings out the life in a stock engine quite a bit.
