hey everybody, im looking to buy another harmonic balancer for my 302 but was wondering if anyone can tell me what are the perks of buying a 400 dollar tci damper compared to a 75 dollar dorman oem stock damper. i do know that they are supposed to absorb vibration, but really thats all i know was looking to see if maybe somebody can shed some light on them on which i should get that better than oem. any input would be greatly appreciated i did do a search but found nothing really on the threads, thanks
I only paid $60 for my aftermarket, name brand balancer. I see the price is now up to $90 and some change.
better vibration damping = longer component and bearing life. Also.. the faster you spin the motor.. the more power they'll provide well beyond the stock units intended rpm range. In some cases.. much improved dampening can even allow the oil temps to run slightly cooler. Less.. crank twist.. valve timing variation.. and good old spark scatter too. you just really need to take into consideration how valuable this current motor is and whether it's worth taking that $400 out your pocket to improve on it. But if you like to "roughhouse" with that car?.. I'd spend the cash since it's usually cheap insurance in the long run. Plus.. good ones last almost forever and can be rebuilt even if they don't by some chance.
This one is a 80007 but is made for a 5.0 imbalance. The weight can be swapped out to fit whatever imbalance you need. It looks like 80006 is 28.4 oz imbalance for 302.
302 uses 28.4 oz imbalance, 5.0 uses 50 oz imbalance. You cannot interchange them. But, you can swap the weight on these if you ever want to move it to the other size engine. Instead of having to buy an entire new balancer. By the way, if you buy this balancer, you might need to buy an extra spacer for it depending on the motor you use it on. I think it was another $9 or so. It pushes the balancer out far enough to line up with the pulleys and belts.
As a FYI the first 5.0 were in the '78 Cobra Mustangs(scoop badge), in '79 Mustang & Capri sported the now familiar 5.0 fender badges... These all used a 28 oz imbalance, not till '81 did the imbalance change to 50 oz...
Also be aware, that Ford used 3 different sets of timing marks (a,b,c) and most aftermarket dampers only come with 2 (a,b) but for some reason the stock Maverick timing pointer is in the 3rd position (c). Took a few phone calls to Fluidamper to figure it out.
This balancer has marks for all three timing marker positions. You can see two different sets in the picture.
dang well i guess ill just get a in between one for now... has anybody tried this one??'' http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-b64269/overview/year/1974/make/ford/model/maverick
Call them, and see if they'll tell you who makes it for them, and ask if you'll need a spacer so the pullies will line up.
Agreed... I ran a stock balancer on a '86 street/strip 5.0 for nine years, in that time it accumulated approx 700 passes... That motor finally succumbed to a blown head gasket, but only because the block deck was burned from previous hits of nitrous... It ran six more years with the questionable deck after the first time it blew the gasket, but I didn't use any spray in that time... I do have a Professional Products balancer that came with my 331 stroker kit...
