hi folks you guys are a great source for some info i needed and still need cple of quick questions i had to repalce the starter in my 70 mav but now when its running it makes a loud squealing sound like something is hitting the old one wasnt shimmed so i didint shim this new one .. any ideas? next question is the water pump the motor is an 85 302 out of a mustang gt (that met a horrible demise) i changed the timing cover to the old style and plugged the oil dip stick hole on the block the problem is the water pump leaks and there is one bolt hole in the pump however no hole in the cover for it to bolt too ... can anyone tell me why this is ?

you sure you got the right starter? you might wanna double check the part number with the part house you got it from.

you got any pictures of the pump and where its leaking from? also isn't the 85 pump a reverse flow?

It sounds like you got the wrong starter. The appendix is not going all the way back and is hitting the flywheel. You need to take it back and get a differant one.

If you changed the time cover to the older stlye than you needed to change the water pump. I think the 85 is when they started with the reverse flow and the serpinte belt.

sounds like a starter isn't disengageing all the way, had that one happen before. no, ya don't need to shim the starter. fords rock like that.

How are you using an 85 timing cover? Did it have a boss for a Mechanical fuel pump or are you running electric?

im not running an 85 cover im using an 85 motor with the old style cover and it does have a mechanical pump after taking another look it appeaRS that a bolt might be broken off inside the cover :( gonna tear it down this weekend ..as far as starter goes i had asked for a starter of a 250 i6 because i used the one out of the six cylender and it worked well till it died .. wich starter do you guys think i should use .... will one from a 85 be the right one ?

just on a hunch, i'd say find the starter that is ""correct"" for that 302block/bellhousing

the 85 block/timing set had provisions for mechanical fuel pump ecentric??? taught me something
