Okay, maybe you guys can help...I want a paint(black) that doesnt have too much of a gloss to it...I kinda like the primered look, but is there a paint that goes over the primer that will give kinda semi-gloss look? I went to a paint and body shop today and they said that they could only paint it a gloss color...Hubby can get a hold of a place to paint it himself, but where would I buy paint like that and what color /finish would it be called?

I suppose you could use a flattening agent in regular black paint to achieve the look your after

the currant trend on some rods/customs is a satin finish. it has a sheen to it like you are looking for, but not a full gloss. any shop can paint it, just a matter of them wanting to.

or like you mentioned, you can do it yourself. ask your paint shop or supplier, they should have the materials to do it.it can be done with any color.

The flattening agent will dull the gloss down to a satin sheen. The painter just has to add it to the clearcoat. But it's not normally done to an entire car. It's usually applied to smaller areas like bumpers and trim. The reason the shop may not want to do the whole car in the satin sheen look is most likely because it is nearly impossible to get the finish to look even on an entire car. The car could end up with spots that will be duller or lighter than others and the car could look like hell when it's done. We have never painted a car with the satin sheen look, but other shops around here who have done them have said it is a real pain in the butt to get it to look right and they won't do it anymore.

    Jean,

Thanks for the advice...The shop says that they have done it before and that it was no problem...Now, keep in mind that I don't intend to keep it this color forever...I like the rat rod look for now, but I know that in the future I will want to go through the car and redo it because I like the restomod look too but just don't have the money for that right now...the car is solid and the interior is in good shape and the engine runs great...so i thought that this would be a good way to go that was cool and inexpensive for now. I know guys that rattle canned theirs, so I figured that this would be at least better than that!:)

    Hey DM,

Thanks for the link! Jamie...I didn't mean that as a dig, and because of a financial snag that I just ran into, who knows...maybe I'll have to do that too...Either that on wait on the paint...either way, I'll need to get her primed because there are a few bare spots where we took sanded where the top used to be...

when i was in the air force we painted aircraft numbers and stencils with flat black paint. of cource it was a polyurathane high solids paint for aircraft use...i am sure that you could get a black in a base coat and not spray a clear coat on it?

i dont know how that would work...but thats a flat color before clear....so just dont add the clear coat to it

    good luck

    Just a feeling

I think once you get the dull/satin paint on the car you'll
wish it was gloss...just my opinion...it's your car :)

    DONo,

You may be right, but if you look up in this post, I did say that this would probally not be my final color...I want the rad rod look for now(the biggest bang for the buck) I have only spent 300 bucks on the car since I bought it(hubcaps 50, bodywork 175, CD player with speakers 25,(it was a special pakage deal at Wally World)...and other misc. interior parts...But I am thinking that maybe I am truely dancing to the beat of a different drummer than some of you guys here...A gloss just wont give the effect that I am looking for at the time being...:)

I know 2 guys around here that rattle canned their cars with the satin black. Both look as if though painted with a gun. They used the Dollar General stuff too. I am still amazed.
