The other day I was wondering about putting headers in my mav. So I went and checked the clearence between the engine and shock towers and I found out there is'nt alot of room has anybody ever put some good headers in a 75 mav w/o changing the suspension?
put headers on my 71, didn't have to mod anything. very cramped though. used summit brand (cost effective)
You can buy headers to fit you car without having to modify anything. You may possibly have to unbolt your driver side motor mount and lift the engine a couple of inches on that side to slide it in but that's about it. You'll need to remove your spark plugs. It's a little time consuming but worth it.
How did you get the Summit headers to fit? You are the first person I have ever heard of who got them in. Most who have ordered them say they are not even close on the fitment. Just curious...I got the Hedman's, and hopefully will have them, along with the engine, installed later this week. Later,
I used Flowtec headers by holley. Had to put drivers side in through the bottom. Don't forget, if you have powers steering, you need the drop down bracket....
Not completely true in all cases. If you have a column shifter, and I am gussing with a 75 model that you do, you will have problems with the shift linkage and headers. Most people convert to floor linkage.
Between the Hookers and the Hedmans, which ones are easiest to install and is there any difference in performance. I tend to like the look of the Hookers, plus I always wanted a Hooker Headers sticker on my car. I am willing to pay the extra $10 for them, unless the Hedman are easier to install.
Hooker super comps work fine with a column shifter. I'm planning on Hooker 6901's when I get it rolling again.
not sure how you got them to fit...i bought the summit headers and they were about 1 inch too wide.. i use Hooker headers....and they fit beautiful..... ther is only 1/2 clearance on the shock tower....it keep the motor from rocking too much...LOL....j/k sprak plugs are a pain and so are the wires.... but yeah...headers all the way
Which headers did you get STManser? With mine, its so much easier to change the plugs now it isn't funny...
Couple things that may, or may not have come up in previous posts... Power steering requires a drop bracket. Column shift must be converted to an aftermarket floor shift. If you don't want to unbolt the engine mounts, then the car must be 36"+ off the ground. Hooker SuperComps are made with thinner gauge steel for weight savings, compared to Comps (or Hooker's Flowtech brand). The thinner metal makes for shorter lived headers when used on the street. They rust and ding up easily. (ask me how I know) Hooker's coating is also crappy. They only apply to the outside of the tubes. A dedicated coater, like Jet Hot, coats the headers inside and out. IMO, coating is 'snake oil', but if you must have it, then get it done right. Jet Hot is a Hooker dealer and will coat you a set right from their shelf, sometimes cheaper than you can get Hooker coated headers. Headers increase power, torque, and fuel economy. They also reduce engine temps. (although increases underhood temp if that is a worry to you) I am a firm believer in headers... Dave
Again, since nobody responded: Between the Hookers and the Hedmans, which ones are easiest to install and is there any difference in performance. I tend to like the look of the Hookers, plus I always wanted a Hooker Headers sticker on my car. I am willing to pay the extra $10 for them, unless the Hedman are easier to install.
Also, I put in a B&M Bandit floor shifter (love it) bud did not remove the linkage at the bottom of the steering column, or at least the last piece that hooks up to the column. Will this be a problem? In other words, how much of the exising column shifter must be removed for the headers to fit?
