    Hello

I would like to know if it is a hard thing to change a manual steering into power. I recently purchased a 71 maverick grabber with a straight 6 250cc automatic:clap: and it needs rebuilding. I drive the car now since it runs great but I'm a middle/novice machanic and would like to do some changes. my list of changes that I would like done is below:

    1) power steering
    2) air conditioning
    3) power windows
    4) disk breaks all around
    5) dual exhaust, probably headers
    6) electrical ignition like a MSD
    7) a little more power to the motor
    8) Bucket seats since the interior is trashed
    9) bigger wheels and gas shocks to raise the rear end.

BUT the first is the power steering! is there a book I can get that will tell me if it is hard or not and what I would need?:hmmm: I have a list of some transferable parts but I need advice BIG TIME. is any of my items on the list not possible.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

:Welcome: Keith to the board sounds like you will have a real classy ride when you are done.Lots of info here and lots of good people to assist you on you're journey. Power steering can be done. lots of parts around for that conversion from steering boxes to cyls. etc. there are people here who have done that conversion .I am doing just the opposite...taking my power steering off. Again welcome...Jim(y)

    Welcome to the board.
As stated, you can add power steering. Most people are removing it due
to leaking and expensive parts needing replacement.

As for dual exhaust. That is a little more difficult with a straight six.
You can get a header for a 6 cyl. and there are tune up and speed
    parts available.

    Hello Jim

Thanks for the welcome and info. I'm going to start buying my power steering parts so now the hunt begins. As for the leaks, isn't there some kind of boot kit available to help prevent that? I saw on ebay some thing to that extent. Anyways thanks again.

Hey I just took all the power steering off of my 72 Mav. You can have them if you want, but I cut two of the hoses and the boot is torn. You can come pick them up (I'm south of you) or I can ship for a small handling fee plus shipping costs.

:Welcome: aboard. In regards to adding power steering it can be done but you'll need everything from the box, pump, pulleys to match, assist ram and will also need to change the centre link on the steering linkage (has the extra hole to hook up the ram). Personally, I had p/s but took it off, steers fine without it, plus it was a pain with the headers even with the drop down bracket for the ram. As for factory a/c, wow, that would be a big job to install as the factory a/c ones had the vents in the dash, unlike non-a/c ones. Addition of power windows and four wheel discs could be done but would require some :2cents: and ingenuity. As for any modifications to the exhaust, engine, ignition etc.you may want to consider swapping to a 302, you'll likely get more personal satisfaction for your dollar spent, then go with exhaust and ignition upgrades along with warming up the engine. Lots of decent seats are available and you may find a good used set to throw in. It all depends on how fancy or how technical you want to get but we'll be here when you decide on what you want to do and need assistance. Good luck.(y)
