hello!!!!! i am considering buying a 4 door 77 comet with the 6 cylinder, just to use as a runabout. are there any mechanical issues i should know about? this car has 50,000 miles on it and looks like it has been in someones garage for twenty years. i found the page about the cowls rusting out, so i will check that. right now the heater doesn't seem to blow hot air, and it won't start, just a lot of clicking from the voltage regulator. it has a new alternator, but the alt light is still on. also the turn signals don't work. anyway, i drove it around, and it runs good! i was looking for a mazda 323 two door to buy, but the price on this "comet" was too good to pass up. i guess using lead substitute in the gas would be a good idea? any help would be appreciated.............john kadner
Sounds like you found a diamond in the rough. The Comet is a very easy car to work on. The items you listed shouldn't be very difficult to fix. If you don't want to buy the car there are several of us who would be interested, just kidding. If you get the car, just ask questions on what to do for specific things and a ton of information will flood your way.
no reason to add lead substitute You wont need lead substitute, the engine was designed to run on unleaded fuel. Dan
new noise has anybody had any trouble with connecting rods or bearings? i am getting a knocking noise at highway speeds, coming from the lower front end of the engine. Maybe waterpump? it also doesn't make any noise until the car warms up.
The quickest way to rule in or out an accessory problem is to remove the belts and start the engine. If the noise goes away, it's an accessory isue. If not, it's engine related.
