ok so i was driving today and when i went to park my car it wouldnt shift out of drive. i was able to force it into park but i think it just broke = [. any ideas? its a 1974 maverick with a automatic transmission. i was able to start the car again but it seems to be stuck in drive. i just want to be able to put it back into reverse so i can get out of my damn parking spot. thanks.

Are we to assume you are talking about a Maverick and that it has a C4?

Follow the gear selection linkage from the steering u-joint, down to the transmission shaft. My guess is one of the little grommets that links two rods together broke. It was probably loose, then when you forced it, it broke. If this is the case, when you follow the linkages down to the transmission shaft, you can manually shift it from under the car. (youll see when you look)

If you can "force" it into park, but it only has drive then your internal linkage may be disconnected from the "rooster comb" (internal linkage). You may have to drop the pan and valve body to fix the problem.
Let us know what you find with the linkage. I can help you through this if you need to drop the valve body to repair the linkage.
