So I now that I'm making a lot of changes to the car on a pretty regular basis I really need to redo the wiring because I just have spliced the original wiring way too much.

This is what I started with....

I started by taking all this out....mostly old gauge wiring stuff....

A while back Bryant helped me do an AWESOME fuse panel upgrade which made the world of a difference....

I still have all original wiring for the most part....I know some people have installed aftermarket wiring kits and just wanted to know what recommendations are out there...

I had to redo the turn signal harness yet once again because my last crappy steering wheel adapter ate it up...

    before...

    after...

this is the harness coming off the ignition switch....

this is the harness going to the windshield wiper switch...

this is the wiper switch...there has to be an easier way to install this so that it just has an on and off switch...

what about this light switch? it has about 100 wires going to it, why does it need so many? doesn't it just run the headlights and tail lights? oh and dim switch

this is the harness end on the engine bay side....

this is the end under the dash on the driver's side...

and then there is this harness that attaches to the harness under the hood...I cut the other end a long time ago....

on a stock wiring, everything runs through the...light switch... that's why one of the best mods. is to run everything through...relays...

I have a...Ron Francis...16 fuse circuit in my car, Earl has the same one in his car...:thumbs2:

If the wiper switch was only an on/off...the wipers will stop anywhere on the windshield when you turn them off

The wiper switch has a de-bouncing circuit built into it so that the wipers can return to the home position.

The light switch has all those wires because its activating 3 seperate circuits and a big potentiometer for the dimming. Potentiometers unlike normal non-variable resistors require a 3rd connection for referencing the voltage drop.

You could turn it into 3 seperate switches and further seperate out the dimmer control if you wanted to.

Interesting about the wiper switch, never thought about that....any way of purchasing a more compact switch still and cleaning up the wiring some?

As for the light switch. The dimmer function isn't too important to me, adding relays sounds interesting if it will help me simplify the wiring. What's the process and can I get an aftermarket switch for that?

does something like this have the circuit built into it to make sure the wipers return to the correct position?

    No usually they dont.
One advantage and definitely something to think about in keeping the stock wiring for the windshield wipers is you can get a plug in relay box from a 80's pickup and a switch with a built in potentiometer and viola you have delayed windshield wipers. It just plugs right into the factory plug and looks just like stock.

    thanks for the info guys....
got more wiring ripped out...well, carefully removed with the proper tools...my goal is to minimize splicing until I have time to really get one of those nicer aftermarket wiring harnesses to put in....

removed the keyless entry system for now....gonna add it back in later...

started work on the engine harness....lot's of stuff that I was able to remove...
the main think I need there is a keyed 12V wire to turn on the relay for the electric fan....

the old setup was pretty nasty....too bulky and too many wires....

one wire goes straight to the alternator for power and one wire goes to the fan and then I have a ground and a wire coming in from 12V ignition wire.

I was able to remove this ....

we ordered this unit which replaces the old one I had...

Here is the engine harness, cleaned up a lot, removed wires I didn't need....

it's hard to see but there is a little tab on every one of those connectors and if you push it into the center of the connector it can be pushed or I guess pulled though the other side...

this was a really helpful tool
    [IMG]

here is another one that worked really well....

this is what the wire looks like with the connector after it's pulled through

Got some fancy shmancy Deutsch connectors. Got a lot of extra ones so we can use them at the shop for other projects as well.

the tool the kit came with is crimping one in this pic, pretty cool, pushes in on all 4 sides
    [IMG]

the pins go together like so in the connector

don't know what this is for....
