Doward here... (SweetHeart74's b/f) Water pump died. Big deal, right? That's what I thought, too. Pull the pump, get new hoses, pump, radiator flush, gaskets + sealer. I had to work, so my buddy (also a car guy - a Mustang guy, no less) offers to pop the pump on for me. Cool, that's one thing out of my hair. He uses the fan bolts (fine thread) in place of the waterpump bolts (coarse thread) and manages to seriously screw up the threads. Tried running a threadchaser through, no go. So I say screw it, drill the holes from 5/16 to 3/8s, and drill the holes in the waterpump a like amount. Bolt everything up, yay! Then I manage to smash not one, not two, but THREE thermostat housings. Yay. Get that straightened away, and then notice the external tranny cooler is sliced. Seems *somebody* (hint, the buddy) forgot steel is stronger than aluminum, and tried to strap it up with some steel - slicing a tube in the process. $60 later, I've got that fixed, then I fire her up - she runs for like 7 seconds, then dies. All attempts at running her have failed. I just got it running for about 15 seconds, when I check the oil, and.... Now I've got water in the oil. When I pulled the pump, I stuck a hose in there, and flushed all the rust crap out. Could I have gotten water in the oil at that point? Next is oil/filter change, then start her again, and see if I get more water in the oil.
I've had a couple of days like that....I feel for you. :bananaman (Glad its not me this time!!!!!!!!!)
LOL, yeah, thanks guys I'm seriously bummed about this whole damn thing. Any ideas on where the water could be leaking in?
Just when I thought I was having a bad day....Jeez, I feel for ya!! hang in there, you'll get 'er going. Might take a few days away from it, but you'll get it.
Ooh! I believe a leaking water pump gasket can allow water into the oil. Anyone else verify this? Hopefully that's all it is and not.... the other. Good luck, and keep us posted. Rick
there is a better chance that the water is leaking in between the timing chain cover and block at that gasket.........but another thought is did you drill and tap thru the timing chain cover:?: if so that would be a strait shot for the water right into the oil.........and like every one else said..........I feel your pain.
I guess I shoulda specified - '74 Mav, 250 I6 is what I'm working on. I pulled the water pump, and the timing chain cover was under it. I never touched the timing chain cover... ideas? Would a leaking water pump gasket cause it to leak water into the oil, on an inline 6?
One other side note - I filled the radiator, and within about 3 hours, the water level had dropped back below the cooling fins... so I'm guessing it's a pretty steady leak. Could it be in the water pump somewhere? I just can't understand where it would be contacting the oil, though.
