Ok having a problem with my maverick it will start and idle but if i hit the gas for to long while its in drive it will shut off completely. its a 250 inline with a webber 1 barrel carb off a later model truck. im just not sure what it could be because it was running just fine a couple of days ago
Have you looked at the obvious such as gas leaks, damaged vacuum lines or a loose carb on the manifold?
I would first isolate the problem to ignition or fuel delivery failure. Does the car start right back up when it quits? Does it stop like you turned off the key, or does it lose power then die? If it doesn't start right back up, check to see if you have ignition. The Duraspark modules will fail usually causing instant shutoff. After the car sits a few minutes, it starts normally again. Fuel delivery failure usually results in a loss of power first, then shutoff. After the engine stops you can get it to start again by pumping the accelerator. The fuel left in the pump circuit will let the engine start for a second or two. No ignition is an easy fix! Replace the module. No fuel is a little more tricky! Make sure your fuel tank vents properly. When the car stops, take off the fuel cap. If it draws in air, the vent system is plugged! (air coming out is normal) Other places to look are old fuel hoses, (they deteriorate letting pieces come off plugging filters and lines) Is the correct fuel cap on the car?, test fuel pump for delivery volume and pressure, check fuel filter at the carb for fuel flow. Most of this diagnosis is easy, just take your time and you'll find out what's wrong!
