    1974 Mercury Comet
    Hi there,
I am glad I found this forum. I recently came accross someone who has a 1974 Mercury Comet GT. They want to sell me the car. I personally, had never heard of a comet up until that point. A Maverick, yes, Mustang, yes, all the rest of the muscle cars, well of course... but not a Comet. That being said, I have no idea what to look for in it, or what it is worth. We are in WA state, so there is some rust... They are asking $2800.00 which I thought might be a little hight. There is no power steering although I am not sure if that was an option on the Comets back then or not. I really like the car, and would like to do a restore on it ( I am a gear-head at heart, an aviation mechanic currently) but dont want to get taken on the asking price. Here are the specs on it from what they have told me:

Mercury Comet GT. Features the orignial Mercury Mag Wheels (avail for only 2 yrs), along with original stripes, motor and all well, the whole darn car is completely original. Owned and maintained by the same 1 owner since 1976. Estimate 150K on her. All glass is intact She is currently parked in the garage, and is not getting much use.
She does have a bit of surface rust here and there and there are a couple places near bottom of car that are more than surface however, not rusted through either. No rust spots are very large, or of any real concern.
All features function as they should (blinkers, headlights, tail-lights, heater, radio), this car is an antique, and does not have power steering, or any other power option.
Tires are good, starts easily, and would also make an excellent first car.
Motor is the original 302, with a 2bbl carb.

So, what I am concerned about is what type of price I should be looking at paying, and what things should I be watching out for when it comes to the specific car. Like Mustangs you can tell what the original motor was by the VIN etc... what should I look for in a comet?? ALSO ADDING A PIC OF THE CAR... Thanks for any help I REALLY appreciate it... (y)

I would say that seems like a fair price to me for a Comet GT. That is a very rare car. Now, don't confuse RARE with disireable or valuable. In the Maverick/Comet circles, that is a rare car. It has the optional buckets, which is a plus. I seem to recall seeing that car before, maybe on ebay??

Dosnt seem unreasonable. I would check for cowl leaks(pour water in the grill just infront of the windshield), if it is solid, I would not think that's a bad price (I wouldn't let the owner know that :) )

For a running driving Commet GT thats a pretty decent price. The Sad truth that all of us Maverick/Comet Lovers have to come to terms with is our cars regardless of how rare our car may be they do not demand a great deal of money. But that has it's advantages, You can restore the car the way you want it without being scared that you are wrecking a collectors item. It's a great car to start out with if you are into older muscle cars. Although I know many people that don't consider a Maverick to be a muscle car, But what else would you car a 2700lb car with a 210hp factory V8. sounds like a muscle car to me.

Long story short If you like the car I'd say it's a fair price, but I would bet money that he'd take $2500 for it.

I'd bet those White buckets are something rare aswell don't see many of those.

Assuming its not rotten which it doesnt appear to be I would gladly pay 2800 for that. That car wouldnt last 1 day listed at that price around here.

Welcome to the forum from NE Illinois. :Welcome:
Comet GT's did come with pwr steering. My 73 GT came w/ it and AC. So they did come w/ pwr steer. I think the asking price is fair from what U have stated abt the car. As stated here, you probably can deal w/ the seller on the price but I wud buy it at the askin price. You can almost bet when u go somewhere w/ the Comet U will have the only one there - Unless ur at a Mav/Comet Roundup or Gathering.
From what I can see at $2800, I wud buy it quick.

Being you are in WA state, that is a good find. You save a lot of money on shipping a car from another state.

That cars on the Seattle CL. If its not too bad rust wise I would pick it up. I haven't seen it in person but it looks pretty nice from the pics. I have P/S on my 72 comet. That cars a Manual on the floor too. I'd pick it up if I didn't already have mine.

302/3-speed with Floor Shift and Buckets ... that's even better for $2800 ... Swap some Small Bumpers on there and it's would be a really nice car.

I've been watching that car on Craigs List. If I didn't already have one, I'd be all over it. I'd ask if they would take $2500. All they can say is "No!" At least give the offer a try. I like the color combo. You can tell by my Comet, that you can do whatever you want to the car. Mine is a Comet LDO/GT clone. It's also a factory 302, with the floor shifter C-4 auto. I even put the factory aluminum mags on it. Mine is a 73, with power steering. Lots of people here in Washington, with Comet/Maverick parts. Also willing to help anyway we can... Good luck!!!
