i am about to run the holley 174 supercharger on my 72 maverick(like maverickmans blue 73) .......my question is do i need to run low compression pistons and rods or will the stock interanls be ok???????any help would be appriciated thanks guys
oh you don't wanna do that! that guys an idiot! ok heres my i'd say you would be fine with 9.5:1 cuz that’s what i ran. but only at 6 lbs and no more then that. now others may say differant but i'm just telling you what i've actually done... i ran it with the entire stock bottom end with just APR rod bolts and the pistons were only TRWs. but personally i'd run an MSD BTM though with it so you can control the timing. i had it first retarded 3 degrees per pound of boost with 12 degrees at the crank and just to tried it out. then back it down to about 1-3/4 degrees per pound of boost also ran fine and noticed a big difference! also you have to consider what cam you have.. cuz the lunati cam is a 108 lobe center so i was blowing most of the boost out which was fine at 9.5:1 most “blower” cams are about 112 or 114.. so just something to consider. IMO over all, it would be more efficient to run lower compression and more boost. from tests at work I don’t think that charge will do much more then 9 lbs effectively personally i think you will have more things to worry about like over heating, clearance, fuel delivery, getting your upper radiator hose to fit and if your running N2O thats a whole another story! oh yeah.... also if your running an automatic your gonna have shifting problems at higher rpm in boost. i went with a manual valve body i'm sure there is another way around it but no one could tell me how. i would suggest getting the holley carb made for that supercharger.. IMO by the time you redo your carb for the supercharger, the time/tuning and cost will be almost the same as the new one. if you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me and since i don’t know much you can gamble on what i tell you
thanks a lot for all that i didnt know that i would need all that......what would you say everything cost you to run the 174 and like have it good like with everything you said? thanks a lot maverickman you definetly know your mavericks
Will that boost give you a set number of horsepower, or increase a percentage of what your engine already makes? In other words, will 6psi give you 45 (or any other number) horsepower, no matter what engine you put it on, or will you get 40% more HP than what your engine is currently making? I always assumed it was a percentage increase...
Also, do you need less compression for higher boost, or the other way around? I would really like to shoot for more like 7 or 8 psi. Currently, I have 8:1 compression. Do I need higher compression for 8psi, or stay low?
no its the lower compression you have the higher boost you can run... and lets say im runnin 376hp now and io was gonna run 6psi of boost think i could hit 475-500hp or am i just dreaming?????
There's more variables in boost vs. compression ratio than you can shake a stick at! For example, oil in the combustion chamber can induce detonation. So can less than 0 deck (where the pistons are down in the bores at TDC), sharp objects in the chamber/piston top, etc. I ran an old cast-piston 8.5:1 302 at over 15 psi turbocharged for a while. While it was a blast to drive, the block wouldnt' take the power and broke a nice hole between the 6 and 7 cylinders. That's one thing about boosting a 302..it's real easy to overcome the strength of the block, especially with a turbo where you just turn a screw to increase the boost. If you stay conservative, it'll last quite a while. Just keep that conservativism in mind when making changes. Boost is very addictive. If 6 psi is fun, you can always turn the screw (or change the pullies) to make 8....and so on and so forth. Next thing you know, you're sitting on the side of the road with a big puddle of anti-oil (anti freeze and oil mixed) running out from under the car. Ask me how I know! By no means am I talking bad about anything...in fact, I encourage you to go for it! Hey, you only live once, might as well do what you want while you're here!
funny i know what your talking about! i wanna put a 9 lbs pulley on my car now also our SRT-4 we have at work we are gonna put a bigger turbo on it since the stock turbo is all at all it can handle right now @15bls
