I was looking on ebay at holley carbs and there are a lot of different 600s. What is a good one to use for my setup ? Really kinda scared to buy a used one what do you all think ? PS im on a budget so take that into account.............
here you go Frank....I'll help you. You've been busy on your project so I understand http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=49138
as an old pal once told me.....if your looking for better fuel mileage, get one with a vacuum secondary. 600 cfm should be fine. As far as used goes.....if I remember right, rebuid kits are decently priced. That might help your decision on what to get based on readily/price available kits.
thanks... as for the carb. a used holley 600 will be fine...just make sure it is all there and hasn't been beat on or any mods. done to it... ...:Handshake...
for economy, a vac secondary is best. the edelbrock carbs a vac secondary and are good for economy. a vac secondary holey is good also, the edelebrock is esyer to tune than the holey. for performance get a holey 600 double pumper. they will give you the best throttle responce. for a good compromise of performance and economy the holley vac secondary would be best. if you have a c4 trans you need to make sure that it has the linkage for the kick down. you can get a kit from holey to convert there carbs to have the ford kick down. if you have a stick shift then you have nothing to worry about.
Look at these list numbers: 1850(dash 1 thru 4), 80457 (these have the auto kickdown, otherwise same as the 1850's) There are other list numbers for 600's as well. When I buy used Holleys, I only pick from those that are fairly new looking, stay away from those that look old, these are usually only good as parts carbs. Holleys hard to tune? That's Bull-**** heard from those who never take the time to learn one . These guys give up too easy and sell their barely used Holleys on ebay.
you dont need a special carb for the aod. just a tv cable for it, you can get them from locar or ford used aods on the carbed crown vics at the end of the 80s and they have the brackets and cables to work with a carb. a eldebrock carb is esyer to tune due to the easy acces to the metering rods and springs. a holey is only harder to tune due to having to remove the bowls and dealing with the gas. as for actually tunenig, both will need it for optimum performance. dont let the tuning factors choose for you but let your performance desires choose.
My experience holleys are the best performance carb out but they are way more sensative to changes in weather than an edelbrock. Plus dirt is realy a bad deal for a holley where a edelbrock will eat rocks and still go fine.
