. Very, very few. Most have been crushed and melted down. It's pretty hard to believe that hundreds of thousands of these were made when you can go months without seeing one.
What I don't understand is around here they seem to crush Mav's and comets ASAP if not sooner, but there still seem to be lots of Bobcats and Pintos hanging around the boneyards for ages. Go figure.
i have two. but i look at it this way...between the 70 and the 72 i have as many mav DOORS on the road as a guy with 3 mavericks!
I don't know if these guys will be able to help, but I found about a company in California that researches how many of any particular domestic car is left, for a fee of course. They claim to be able to use multiple databases to get their figures and also claim them to be very realistic. For example, I had them see how many Stallions are allegedly left out of the 5,529 made. They claim only 216 remain in the U.S. The company is called Automotive Information Group. I can forward you their contact info if you are interested in trying this resource. As to Mavs/Comets going to blue oval heaven, from what I seem to be seeing in trying to find parts for customers, they aren't the only cars heading to salvage yard extinction. Mustang IIs seem to be heading the same way also, despite the renewed interest in tham just like our choice of cars. Apparently, the yards that are doing a better business with people fixing more cars than ever, classic and non, want to keep the cars that are moving parts and not just taking up valuable space. Example, a couple of weeks ago I lost out on a near perfect early Mav bumper at a yard because I was one day late calling because after it got moved to the crusher line the bumper was damaged by the fork lift. I had a similar encounter days later over a Mustang II bumper a customer was in bad need of. Places that do not regularly send vehicles to slaughter like Desert Valley in Arizona command premium prices for what they have regardless what car you are looking at parts for, Mavs included. Auto Krafters is no bargain for used parts either if you have checked lately. If there is an answer to this problem, I don't know what it is. The yards look at cash flow as their primary motivation, no surprise there, and it's doubtful that there can be a way to change that. The only advice I can give for the moment is for everyone who has the resources to save whatever Mavs/Comets they can if only for parts. I realize that many do not have the money and/or space to store cars, but if we make a concerted effort, we can help this and hopefully stall the demise of available cars and parts for at least a while longer than if we don't. If you know of any for sale and cannot buy them yourself, spread the word of the availability and hopefully someone else can. I'm in the process of buying a '74 myself and hoping that a '72 I looked at becomes mine also. Neither are going to be parted, but driven and made beautiful again, even though the '74 needs little, just like when I rescued my Stallion two years ago. I just learned of a clean, extraordinarily low mileage '72 for sale in north suburban Pittsburgh that I'm going to get info about to pass on later today. It's a bit more expensive than I can afford at this moment, $3800/negotiable, but maybe someone out there may want to give it a new stable.
how many There are four on the road that I know of in my county in Virginia, 1 2dr Mav, My comet gt , 1 4dr comet,1 4 dr Mav. Just my corner of the world. "my comet gt"
I don't know about the rest of the country but at least in my small corner of S. Cali there are at least 10 that I know of. And I have seen quite a few in "the Valley" and more towards South Bay.
Besides my two Mavericks, there are five more that are on the road in my area. One is a four door 76' that I had an chance to pick up for $400, but it was a serious rust bucket. Someone else bought it and I still see it around now and then. Most of the bone yards around here don't keep Mavericks and Comets around too long. There was one yard a few miles south of me that had eight or nine Mavs and Comets with quite a few very decent parts on them. I had every intention of going down there and getting a few parts to have on hand, but things got busy and I never got back down there. Now it's too late. The yard owner had them all crushed. Now I know if I see a decent Mav or Comet in the boneyard it's best to save as many good reusable parts as possible before they end up as a giant paperweight.
At the Pick-Your-Part in Chula Vista, Ca., there are currently two 2 door Mavs and one 4 door Comet. The 2dorrs are both 6's and are 75 and 76 respectively. Still lots of good parts. The 4 door comet is a V8 with all the v8 swap parts still there. I hope to get back down there this week to get the trans crossmenber, under engine brace and engine mounts. If one of you needs these parts and gets there first, so be it. Green 2 door has good driver side door, all dash, good floor pans, etc. The right front fender looks good and it still has all power steering parts. Losts of other good stuff as well. Blue 2 door is a little rougher. Bad floor rust, interior largely trashed. Depends on what you need. 4 door Comet. Engine, trans and rear still in car. Driver door missing. Power disc brakes. Sorry, someone else already got the spindles, rotors and calipers. Power brake shock tower brace is there as well as master cylinder/power booster. Was an A/C car so all interior A/C components still there. Good rear tail lights and panel, trunk lid, etc. Nice Comet hood. Grill brocken. Good front fenders. Usable fron bucket seats for a 4 door. (no recline) Please, save as much as you want/can.
I live in a town of about 22,000 people and I know of at least 7 that are driven around town, but none in the 3 local wrecking yards.
Around here I have been seening more and more mavs and comets. A lot of 2 doors and some 4 doors. I have seen a 4 door mav sitting in a driveway that has not been driven in a long time. I just heard of another one a 2 door grabber with no engine that they may what to sell. The bad thing is I'm short of cash to get it. I think that mavs and comets maybe coming back for people to restore. I hope so.
thank heavens... ...I am not an AMC Pacer or Matador enthusiast !! I guess it could be worse guys. Seth
