    So does anyone know how to read the vin on a maverick or know of a website that can tell me about my maverick just by typing in the vin. Iv'e always been curios about where it came from, what motor it originally had and little details like that?

    First digit is the model year. 0 is 1970, 1 is 71, 2, is 72, and so on up to 77.

    Second digit is the plant it was built at:
    K = Kansas City
    X = St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada
    W = Wayne, Michigan
    F = Dearborn, Michigan

    Third and fourth are the body codes:
    91 = standard 2 door Maverick
    92 = 4 door Maverick
    93 = Grabber
    30 = 4 door Comet
    31 = 2 door Comet

    Fourth number is the engine code:
    U = 170 I6
    T = 200 I6
    L = 250 I6
    F = 302 V8

    The last 6 digits is the number the car was assigned when it was scheduled for production. For example 167193 would be the 67,193rd car scheduled for production by the factory for that model year. 216890 would be the 116,890th car. The cars weren't always built in sequence, It is possible that a car with a higher number could have went down the assembly line before a car with a lower number.

    My '72 daily beater's VIN is 2K91T146486. So it is a '72, built at the Kansas City plant, 2 door NON Grabber Maverick with a 200 I6, and was the 46,486th car scheduled for production at the Kansas City plant for the '72 model year.

    '73, built at Kansas City, 2 door NON Grabber, 302 V8 engine, 57,940th car scheduled for production at the Kansas City plant for the '73 model year.

    We can decode the rest of the codes on your door sticker as well.

    There should be a sticker inside your drivers side door jam. It will have "color" and "trim" on it with codes under each. It will also have "body" (body code will be 62A for your car), "trans" (1 = 3 speed manual, W = C4 auto), "axle" (3 = 2.79:1 geared 8 inch rear, 6 = 3.00:1 8 inch), and "DSO", which means District Sales Office. That code basically tells you what major city your car was bought new in or near.

    :rofl2: They said it was a brand new $2000 paint job when i got it and it has been wrecked before and most the parts are off a comet so i didn't know if they tried to match original or new color.
