First of all, I'd like to say hello. I'm very happy to be a part of a bunch of Comet/Maverick geeks like you all. I can't tell you how helpful your info has been. But I do have a question about my Comet's flywheel. I have a reman 302 (suppose to be mid 70's model) with C4 tranny. My car has always had a annoying shimmy to it while driving. I've changed out my harmonic balancer and made no difference. So now I'm wondering about the flexplate. The numbers on the counter weight are C4AE-6375 B ASSY. I know there's bound to be one of you who can help me. Thanks!
Welcome aboard! :Handshake The shimmy you speak of, do you feel it only while driving? If it's in the engine/flywheel you will feel a terrible vibration by simply racing the engine up while in nuetral. We need to do a process of elimination here. What speeds are you going when you feel it? Will it go away if you put the shifter in nuetral and coast? Do you feel it in the steering wheel?
The shimmy is worst at about 55mph and 2000rpm and it really shakes the steering wheel. But as soon as I give it more gas, the shimmy fades away. Don't really feel anything at idle or neutral.
I put new u-joints in a few years ago, not too many miles be driven since then. I've also got new pacer wheels and new tires, not noticed any change in the vibration there either.
So, you feel the shimmy at 55. While cruising at 55, if you slip it into nuetral, does the shimmy stay there or go away? It really sounds to me like you have a tire or rim problem, likely on the front wheels.
Does your car have power steering??? If so It may very well be the assist cylinder for your power steering causing the bad vibes. If not...then I am with Ray...Wheel balance/bent rim or... loose/worn front end parts. Tie rod ends come to mind.Good luck!!! and welcome to the madness!!!
My car does not have power steering. I've never put the car in nuetual while cruising @ 55, I'll try it on the way home from work today. Another reason that I think it's the engine is the headers that came with my car are not good fitting ones at all. They make contact with both sock towers and the steering colomn I think. Not really a beefed up motor so I'm thinking about going back to manifolds. But even if the headers do touch the column, should it shack that much or is that normal?
