Okay, I need some opinions. I was explaining to my friend's neighbor that my car ('74 comet 6 banger) was cooler than her's('9? Honda Prelude). Am I correct? So I told her I was building a new motor and my car would soon be faster than her's. She laughed, made fun of me, and challenged me to a race. 1/2 mile straight for $20. I realize that the little rice nibbling bastards are quick, but my car weighs less(2800 to 2950) and I'm intsalling this: A mass air injected 302, e303 roller cam, ported and polished '65 289 heads, sealed power flat tops for a mild 9.55 comp. ratio, probably manifolds. It will be built well and strong, and will power either my 3-speed or a c-4. Stock 300 gears. CAN I LAY THE SMACK DOWN ON THIS HAMPSTER POWERED RICE GRINDER?

"Cooler" is stictly a matter of opinion. The same argumnmet could be made between me and a 60 year old guy with a 1957 chevy. He probably thinks his car is "cooler" and wonders why a young whipper snapper (that would be me) would think any differently.

Yes, I know it is a matter of opinion, but I was hoping that on this forum there would be a few people that ageed with me. Perhaps unique is a better term.

I think a Maverick is more cool than a Prelude. (y)
I like '57 Chevy's. Pretty much anything American made between '49 and '73 (up to '77 for Mavs) is allowed to park in my yard. :D

I don't understand the mentality of the "Honda" crowd. For some reason these people think that nothing can challenge a Honda. If your v8 is even hitting on 6 cylinders you should have nooooo problem with this one.Lay the smackdown on her and then offer her a one way ticket to Japan!

If you install a 302 with the specs you just mentioned, your car will walk away from her Honda like it's standing still....provided that you don't just sit there while your tires go up in smoke.

Preludes are cool-looking cars, but a modified V-8 in a fairly light-weight car will still smoke a modified 4-banger in those Hondas. Your car with a V-8 will whip her in a race, but there's no denying the fact that the Prelude has a much sleeker and sportier look than a big-bumper Maverick/Comet. Most chicks are more interested in appearance than speed & power...

Ok, I LOVE American hot rods and all, but Im actually tired of hearing about rice this and rice that. Imports can be made fast just like Mavericks can be made fast. There is no reason to bash Hondas just because they design(not build necessarily) them in Japan. From the factory NEITHER are anything to brag about. Its like saying, " My neighbor has a Yugo that they think is really fast. Can I beat him with my Geo?". There is tons of "rice" out there that will simply destroy your car, but that doesnt make your car "dumbestic crap". There is always somebody faster. No reason to get hung up on what country their car comes from.

That being said, Mavs rule all! :D

    AC

EDIT, You know its funny, there is one each Geo and Honda sitting out in my driveway right now LOL Freaky...

I guess I'm not politically correct.I got a problem with what country they're from because when I talk to a Honda "racer" and ask why a Honda this is usually the stock answer-"American cars suck,Hondas are more reliable, get better mpg, make more hp per liter, bla bla."It's kinda funny though,I usually don't get that kind of US bash from Mitsu,Nissan,orToyota guys...and they're more than likely faster than the Honda "racer".Im sorry if I made anyone mad,I just get tired of hearing how fast these Hondas are,and most of them are slower than a stock Taurus or minivan. But they sure are loud...

Domestic made cars for me only thankyou. I saw a Toyota Camry the other day and it had a huge graphic with US flag in it. In it was this 'I LOVE AMERICA'. I still havent figured that one out. Dont get me wrong, just cause I drive US built does not make me anymore citizen than anyone. I havent forgiven the Japs for Pearl Harbor.

I for one fail to see the fascination with these cars and what's worse is for the most part the kids that drive them are disrespectful little punks spoiled by their parents. I have yet to be challenged by one on the street but I have had the joy of lining up with them at the track on test & tune night and making them look like there car was as fast as a tricycle.
My advice basher is to speak softly until you get the car like you want it. Then at the right time challenge her to a pink slip race in the 1/4 mile...she will either shut up real qwik or you'll be the new owner of a prelude.
Sorry...I'll get off my soapbox now:D

Gotta play devils advocate for a sec.
    1:
Late 90's Preludes with the Vtec 2.2L and a five speed haul the mail in stock form and when well modified can be very fast cars.
    2:
There was a very unassuming looking '95 or '96 Civic hatchback at the dragstrip almost every week I went down this summer running 11.6's

Point is Hondas can be very fast and are good cars. They have plenty of cool things about them as almost any car does.
That said, The honda I mentioned was the only one there that ever ran what most of us hot rodder types would consider a fast time.

And now I'll brace for impact.:D

    Ricers:

Just a whole different crowd. You won't see those folks hanging around the drag races unless there's a import-only race, or a special class for them. They're just not the same as us die-hard hot rod V8, V6 domestic car lovers (and straight 6 & SVO 4 cyl. for that matter!). I hope I didn't offend anyone. One thing is for sure. Speaking from experience, those rice cars are definetly quick...up to about 30 mph, after that, they'll need 1/2 mile to get it to 70 and another mile or so to get it to 100. That's called lack of horsepower. They'll do ok in 1st gear, but after that they sign off...just like the new Cummins Dodge HO 600 diesel. Dodge raves about it...and yes, it's definetly got power....but signs off just when the underestimated 6.0L PSD is making it's power. Those 6.0L's are FAST for a diesel!

Had a guy (actually a neighbor/friend) challenge my Mustang ('84 5.0L 5 speed...nearly stock) against his built Prelude. I told him I hope he didn't want to bet too much because I didn't want to break him, course he was like yeah right...that stocker can't touch my "built" Honda. Never did get to run the ol' boy, he wanted to run on the street (and I don't street race for safety reasons). And, he doesn't want to meet me at the drag strip either. Guess he's wussed out on me!

Never had one that fast at our track Ray...although I did run a heavily modded VW beetle that gave me all I wanted @ 8 flat. I got him off the line and was not able to put any distance between us. I keep lookin over at him expecting him too fade and he stays right there speed shifting through that 4 speed...all these visions kept flashing through my mind...the thought of losing to a beetle....aaarrrrrgggghhhhh....
