I quit on trying to get myself a 66 Mustang or a 69 Charger(my favorite car of all time) and was looking for alternatives. Someone pointed this car to me and when I saw it, I just fell in love. I guess I just love the compact muscle look it has. But I have 2 questions about the Maverick. 1. Why don't they seem to be very popular? I can understand being less popular than the Mustang, but why doesn't it seem to be talked about more? 2. Why is it that it seems almost all Mavericks are in Mexico or Brazil? Not that there is anything wrong with that, but every site I go to it just seems like 90% of users are in Brazil or Mexico.
The Maverick was an economy car, not a sporty one like the Mustang. It did outsell the Mustang in the beginning. They are becomming more popular, Hang around here and you'll see there's a lot of Mavericks in the u.s. and canada. Welcome to the board.
Mustangs are considered "muscle cars" Mavericks are read headded step children.Never meant to be a "muscle car" Hence the lack of popularity.(good for us) keeps the price down so we can afford em.Mavs were built in So.America.The climate in that region and mexico has been conducive to their longevity down there.in Brazil the mav was considered a hot rod when equipped from the factory with a V-8 and a 4 speed (yes I said 4 speed)they have a cult like following down there.Up north of the equator they are just starting to come in to their own so get one while they are still cheap. Some day they may become un-obtanium like mustangs and (yuck)camaros.
Mavericks are something that if you had a Maverick at some point in your life you understand how cool they are. i hear people all the time " i use to have a Maverick " or " i should've kept mine " or " i had a Grabber " just that alone make me keep mine!
I bought one recently. It's a 1974 Maverick 2 Door. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow hopefully. that depends on the DMV and if they approve the registration, insurance and give me my plates of course. funny, it looks like a muscle car to me. Just a compact one.
Welcome to the Madness! You will find this forum full of people willing to share info and help. Lee Iacoca of Ford had 3 huge sales successes, the Mustang, Maverick, and Mustang II. Mavericks and Mustang II's never enjoyed the popularity of the first generation Mustangs and most were crushed over the years. The remaining ones are becoming more popular each year. Enjoy yours for it's uniqueness. Jim
Yes...I hear that at least a dozen times during every car show I enter into. Everybody and their relative had a Maverick back in the day!
Well i live north of the border and i have been a Maverick fan all my life. I bought my first in 1990 and have owned several Mavericks and Comets. I guess my love of these cars started in the '70s when my mom got her first car which was a Comet. And yes there were times i have in the past brought my Comet to a car show and had some a$$hole tell me my car was not good enough ,old enough ,classic enough- (my favorite) to go to their "show". Only in recent years has this changed and now my car is "o.k." to go to these shows. Please, pi$$ off, I DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T LIKE MY TYPE OF CAR. I still will bring my Comet to the shows regardless of what these gear boxes think.Like i always say, even if i won 50 million dollars tomorrow i would still own a Comet and a few Mavericks also. Of course any car i would own would get a complete restoration.Anyway that's my 2 cents worth (or $ 50 million).
i think brazilian mavericks are actually a very rear breed IMO the reason mavericks arent considered popular muscel cars in this part of the world is because they never really offered anything cool under the hood. 200hp 2v 30s is the best ford ever offered the public. the way people think of the modern day focus is pretty much what the maverick was back then. a cheap, reliable, economical, import fighter. i like to be diffrent anyway. it would be hard for me to be excited about owning a mustang or comaro or something everyone else has
Mavericks and Maverick/Comet owners are a breed all thier own. We have the ability to see the potential in these cars that others don't. To most people the Mavericks and the Comets were fairly cheap, economical grocery getters and ' grandma ' cars. That's what Ford intended them to be. They had a sporty look to them, but they were never intended to be the next Mustang. That car got the 'Muscle Car ' treatment. Ford did try to spice up the Maverick with the Grabber and later on with the Stallion. The Comet got the Comet GT package. But Ford never beefed them up with anything larger than the 302 V8, so it was kind of hard to shake the grocery getter/grandma car image. Now years later the Mavericks and Comets are making a comeback. The Mustang has been in production for 43 1/2 years and have pretty much become a dime a dozen. Go to any car show and count how many Mustangs are there. They are all over the place, and they are not cheap to come by. A rusted out beater of a Mustang will set you back pretty penny. Enter the Maverick/Comets. They still have that sporty good look to them. You can still pick up a decent fixer upper for an affordable price. Finding some parts can be a challange at times, but it's starting to get a bit easier now and the prices are still affordable. You can keep them stock or modify them just about anyway you want. They make a person give themselves whiplash as they try to get a good look at one as it cruises down the street. They're just fun cars to own and drive. I personally can't think of a better car to buck the status quo with. You gotta be a Maverick to drive a Maverick.
Hear Hear Jean Doll beautifully said and correct. You can almost trip over all the Mustangs at the car cruises but only see a few or only one Maverick/Comet at the same show. And cheap ,yes, i myself paid $200 for my Comet and that was in 1993 and it still runs great, same engine and everything as the day it was made 32 years ago. Nobody is going to tell me my Comet is no good or not good enough to go to their "show".
