    I was given a small block along with a C4 trans and I'm trying to identify the engine. A bit hard since it has 40-60 lbs of oil - crud on it. One valve cover was off and I found 302 cast in the head. Couldn't find any casting mark for 2V or 4V but it came with a 2 barrel. Valve cover has a decal and I didn't find any metal tags so I'm guessing (right now) that it's 73 or later motor.

    Where do I scrap off the crud to find casting marks for the block etc? Don't really want to get into a major cleaning session right now just want to identify what I have so I can make a plan. Any recommended site that would have the info?

    The only OHV Fords I've worked on were Y-Blocks so these motors are totally new to me.

    Thanks guys;
