I have 71 Comet GT. It's been sitting in the garage a while. I've been having fun with a Corvette and getting back to it, now. I noticed the old ignition switch was not working right. The switch would not lock. I bought a new switch and installed it. Now, the car will cut on and run just fine, but won' cut off. I can turn the switch to 'Off' and even pull out the key, and it will continue to run. (I put a towel over the carb to cut it off.) I took out the new switch and installed the old switch, again. Same story. It will not cut off. What am I missing here? I've studied many of the threads on this site but do not see a similar situation.

Common problem when ign bypass contact is stuck inside solenoid. When running & ign off, remove both small wires on solenoid. If engine dies that's 99% the problem.

BTW choking a engine till it dies is one of the worse things that can be done. Creates excessive engine wear by washing down cylinder walls with gas & diluting the oil.

Yep, that was it. It had been sitting for a while and must've gotten stuck. A few knocks on it solved the problem. Will replace just to be sure it doesn't happen again. Thanks!

That’s why I buy NOS ones at the car shows when I find them. Always have 2 or 3 on the shelf!
