1st of all i do not know anything thing about transmission, now my transmission shift from 0-10 fine but wont anymore so i took it to this guy that have did transmission work for my uncle, i was thinking that the valve body valves was maybe stuck or something like that... he calls me to come to the shop he wants to show me something.. he shows me the valve body and shows me little pieces of metal inside the valve body, i have changed the transmission oil recently and i didnt see any metal at all and trust me i was looking, but when he showed me the valve body its seems like it was black oil all over the valve body but the transmission fluid was still very pink.. i think he knows whats wrong with it but he telling me it needs rebuilding, he told me that since he does so much work for my uncle hes going to charger me 300.00... i think he going to fix the problem and charge me 300 dollars like he have rebuilt it... got a bad feeling for some reason... sorry for longggggggggggg story...
Check with your Uncle and if he says this guy is on the up and up. I'd go for it. I would ask how long it is guaranteed for. $300 is cheap if that is what it needs.
my uncle says hes good and never had any problems out of his work, but he crooked as the letter R.. he told would give me a year warranty on it
Did he say rebuild it or repair it. There is a difference. My guess is he will repair it since I don't see how he could rebuild it for $300.00.
Nope, me either. Just had one rebuilt/strengthened for the Bronco at 180k miles to handle the torque of the new engine and it cost nearly $1,600.00.
he said rebuild it, taking the transmission out and putting it back in is worth 300 alone, dont see how he can do it for that much, im going to talk to him in the morning and see whats up.. it was a 19-20 year old girl there with a short dress on maybe that got him off track and he meant clean or repair... my wife was with me so i was looking straight ahead so i didnt really see her
If he has to REMOVE and REISTALL the tranny....sounds like a repair to me, not a rebuild. Worth asking about.
I can see 300, parts for a quick rebuild not including a convertor are way less than that, he just wouldn't be putting much in his pocket on the labor side of things. Say the kit runs him $75, that's $225 in labor. Maybe he's on that bases jobs by the job or he figures he's doing it for $20 per hour. At that rate its just over 11 hours to perform the job. Regarding what he showed you in the valve body, very possible it was there and had been there. How long have you had the car and how many miles were on it before you bought it? I have pulled down some transmissions and even after a fluid change there is black residue coating the inside of the trans. It's a byproduct of regular wear.
In the future, take a picture of the "broken" parts with your cell phone, and upload it here for "expert" opinions before agreeing to get the repair work done.
When you say it didn't shift like it should, what was it doing? The vacuum modulator can make a transmission do some weird stuff when it goes bad. My GTO would accelerate but not shift into second. Eventually it would up shift but it would go right to third. It would also freewheel in first when you let off the gas. That can be as simple as a bad diaphragm in the modulator or a split vacuum hose that feeds it.
Replaced the modulator twice cause I thought maybe I got a bad one and also replace hose that went to intake to modulator......when I said not shifting like it suppose to the shifts got later and later until it wouldnt shift at all into second or third
