So in having to get my car inspected yesterday a mechanic looked it over and said that it will not pass inspection he noticed off hand that the Shocks and bushings are beat. He said from the last time he remembered it was 3-400 to fix up. He said that I can come by and he will look over the car see if there are anymore issues and also double check prices. Does that sound about right?

If it is just the shocks, you can get them for under $20 each and they are simple to install. If the bushings he mentioned are the upper and lower control arm bushings or strut arm bushings that is a little more involved.
Have him double check it and give you a full quote.

How much do you think it would be if its the upper, lower, and control arm bushings? Is that hard to install? I am so broke its not funny. He first told me I should prob try and find someone to lick it and stick it, as in find someone to just give me an inspection sticker, because he knows I am a broke ass college student excuse my french. But I do want it solved because I am wondering what can happen if they do not get fixed, dont want to run into it.

I would try to find someone else to inspect it. I can't believe they fail the inspection for shock bushings. It makes me happy that we don't have inspections here. I don't know NY labor rates, but replacing the control arm bushings will cost more than the shocks. The shocks you'll be able to do yourself with a few simple hand tools.

I say the same, Take it to another inspector! try to find a inspection place that is not an auto repair shop. I'm an inspector myself here in Mass, We have the machine to inspect our own vehicles and we only work on our own so when an outsider comes for an inspection is not our interest to fail someone to get the job. I would tell you that you need the shock bushings but would not fail the car for that;)

I also say find someone else to inspect your car. Chirt is right in that they will tell you that your shock bushings are worn but should still pass your car. $300-$400 to fix it is way too much. Take it to somone else and see what they say, it can't hurt.

If you are handy with tools ... you can get a COMPLETE front end rebuild kit for around $250 ... and the entire front suspension will be brand new ... Mavericks and COmets use same front suspension as 68-73 Mustangs

If the bussings are worn then the control arms, idler arm and strut rods can all move around - when they shouldn't.
If you are going to do the work yourself get some fine thread threaded rod and some nuts and washers to use as a press to put the new ones in.
