So my girlfriend works at sonic and keeps telling me about how all these people with sweet cars come in every saturday night for there own mini car show. I decided to go tonight to see the cars and they were all really sweet. So I sat with my girl for a little bit while she was on break and decided to back my 351W Maverick up and pop the hood, (Like the other cars were parked) to see what people thought. A car pulls in next me and people immediatly start runnng over and asking questions about it. So my girl goes back to work and I get out of my car and nobody really cares. I mean I know it looks like crap and runs like crap and is basically crap, but I'm 19 I can't afford anything but I have put alot of sweat into that car and I love it. So I start looking at all the other cars because I'm interested and still nothing, and I didn't bother introducing myself because they were all talking to each other. So I just closed my hood and left in shame... I don't know if they thought I was an embarrasment or if my maverick is just crap to them but now I feel like crap. I'm sorry I'm ranting I just needed to tell someone and I figure you guys would listen. ...sigh...

dude i am 18 and all i can say is f%$^ those other guys they probably have mommy and daddy buying their stuff and have imports. i have a 72 grabber with messed up front fenders and a grabber hood i have an exhaust leak but i still drive it everyday as long as you are happy with your maverick. save paycheck to paycheck like i do and soon you will have it the way you want it. i am almost done with mine and i started in January. all i need is my top end kit body/paint tires and rims and different gear ratio and i am set. what i recommend is do your engine work first get a nice roller cam some heads(i am planning to use dart) and good intake with a 4bbrl carb. then work on the body. btw good luck

Keep the Maverick and keep adding to it until it's awesome like the dozens of showcars whose owners post here. Your car is not a joke, it's old. Kids today like tuners and spinning rims and bright colors under all that plastic beneath the hood. They would rather soup up their stereos and decklids than they would the engine. I mean sure they'll color it up and add stainless bits and filters and whatever but at the end of the day their cars are still running on half an engine. Turbos and nitrous on a 4 cylinder is like giving a midget steroids.
Your car has something theirs doesnt, the satisfaction that when the day comes it will most likely be the only one like it at the show. Keep at it dude. Mine looked like crap when I got it but as time goes by I notice the better it looks. Keep posting here too. There should be a law against owning our cars and NOT posting here. Seriously, this site will save your cars life wait and see.

Mavericks tend to not get the respect we feel they deserve. They are sorta the red headed stepchild of the cool car scene. Never a "real muscle car" Allways in the shadow of the Belly button cars (stangs/camaros/ chevelles etc...) I go to a few local cruises/shows and had the same reaction with my Sprint the first few times. Everyone gets interested when I start it up to leave though...LOL... I had a bunch of Vette guys who sponsor a local cruise here at the steak and lube. Took em 2 thursdays before they realised the car was not a grocery getter...LOL...Then they all thought it was pretty cool. Dont let em bother you man. Some cruises/shows have a clique about em and it takes a bit before they warm up to ya. If they dont, forget em and just enjoy the cars. Owning a Maverick/Comet puts you in a different crowd than the belly button clique. Sometimes you gotta have thick skin...Like cowhide man...

Thank you so much guys. But these were Chevy big block T-Buckets, old stangs and thunderbirds so I figured I would get some respect but I guess not. We'll see how they feel when I finish my 347 Stroker with a roller cam aluminum trick flow heads and my edelbrock 4 barrel intake. All thats left is my heads and intake but unfortuanatly I gotta get my other car running so no money to the Maverick hopefully those old timers will still be doing it when I finally finish.

    LMAO YES!:rofl2:

Screw the haters and people who don't "get it." People always ask, "so when are you gonna paint it?" I tell them, "I already did" ;)
One thing I noticed is that there is a clique of the car show crowd (old guys with immaculate old cars) that only seem to like the cars that EVERYONE and their dog have (Mustangs, Chevelles, Novas, and the occasional Corvette and Mopar) and don't give a second glance at anything that isn't in this "me-too" category of classics (a me-too classic? Yes it exists.)

Front engine, rear wheel drive, long hood, short deck, factory V8 optioned...sounds like a musclecar to me.
I know a Corvette guy and he is pretty focused on his car being the logical conclusion to the automobiles evolution. Nothing else gets his attention but ask him if the screws holding the sending unit were originally cad plated and he can go on for hours.

Their just jellous, cuz they weigh half as much, cost half as much, and still kick all their asses on the strip! HA! And here you are some young kid who has a car that didnt cost much and still makin the set! And they all know it! So yeh, it aint no mustang, camero, or chevelle, but that is what makes it soo cool. No frills, thrills, but if you build it right, itll beat up on alot of that corp crap. Its the poor mans hot rod, and in that, lies its strength!

I went to a show last Sunday and had alot of the you don't see them anymore stuff. It was a top 25 show and there was 60 cars so I thought I might get a trophy. Now this show was judged by 2 guys that knew cars ( I thought ) Well after sitting around with some friends for 6 hours I got a shock. I had to stand and watch a 2010 Camaro and a 04 pick-up with fancy wheels get trophy's. That's why I hardly ever go to show's. Car show's are a :rofl2:

dude im 18 and i know how you feel but its a maverick man how many times do you see a maverick when you go out to drive?? i mean yea my maverick isnt a show winner it has body rust whole front end is in primer and the rest is pale red my engine is starting to smoke on start up and then goes away, doesnt handle the best in the world but its a maverick and most of all its my first car and its a maverick and im proud to say ive done all the work myself and payed for it all myself so be proud of it man so what if some one else doesnt like it everyone has their own taste in cars and what good and whats bad so if you think its cool than its cool man plus you said you have a 351 in your maverick and i think thats cool major sleeper if you ask me

IMHO It is not the car model (maverick/comet) as much as it is the current state it is in. If you had a mustang/camaro that YOU yourself thought looked like crap and ran like crap and was basically crap, would you expect others to come running up to ask questions about it?

You love it not only for what it IS but for what you envision it to be(I assume) ... others don't see your vision, they can only see what it IS.
Keep working on it and you will turn heads and get attention ... over time.(y)
