I was goofing around once and popped the clutch and left a old fashioned burn out in my driveway, someone was looking at the marks and said because I made one on each side that I have a posi rear end is that true, or is there an easy way to find out. Any help appreciated, it's a 75 Mav stock 302 and five lug wheels if that helps. Marty

To my knowledge mavericks didn't come factory equiped with a locker/posi. The dealer may have installed them. So if this original probabally not. Sometimes the peg legs (single track) will grab and spin both wheels. If you have a posi Jack the rear end up and spin the wheels, both wheels will spin in the same direction. If they spin opposite then you have an open/non posi rear end. Good Luck

    Keep on Mavericking.

another way to tell......when you spin-out(peel-out...so to speak). Posi-units usually leave 2 marks ,compare to the standard which only leaves 1 mark....spin on a flat dirt surface and observe the marks....

I was told this. Dunno if it's absolutley true in all cases.

If you jack up both wheels off the ground, both tires should turn in the same direction.

The wheels turn in opposite direction on non-posi's.

Can I get a confirmation from another old fart over 40?

Not over 40 (18 actually), but this is how I always knew how to do it. (y)

    Jack up the car:
Wheels turn in same direction (Posi Track)
Wheels turn in opposite direction (Open rear)

What would the wheels do in a limited slip rear?

I know for a fact I don't have posi track. I replaced the 3rd member years ago with a junk yard swap. When I get a good burn out going, it'll leave 2 tracks.

    Same thing as a Posi.

A "posi" is a limited-slip. "Posi-traction" is a Chevy term. Different manufactuers have their own brand-name for limited-slip differentials. Ford calld it "Traction-Lok". Chrysler called it "Sure-Grip". Oldsmobile called it "Anti-Spin". I think it was AMC who called it "Twin-Grip". I can't remember right now what Buick and Pontiac called theirs. Most people just use the word "Posi" as a generic name for it...

    *Edited for spelling*

They had a burn-out contest today at the Year One Show. It was pretty funny seeing some Camaro guys looking back at their driver side rear wheel and wonder why it wasn't moving ... they were doing one wheel peels. Wonder if they thought they had a posi and just found out they didn't! :)
