what would be the best donor car to look for a new 3rd member out of? i currently have 3.00-1 gears and would like something a little more peppy, i have the stock 8 inch
Pinto's - (yes I said the P word) They often came with a 3:40 or a 3:55 if they had A/C. Also, watch for early Mustangs and Cougars, they came with 8" rears and if you are lucky, you might find a Traction-Lok, particularly in the Cougar.
Only v6 pinto's and mustang "too's" had the 8",I don't think A/C matters-the 4cyl cars had the inspection plate type rear.I've seen some of these 8" w/ limited slip, look for an "L" between the 3 and the 40 or 55 on the tag.
Don't say only V6, as with everything Ford put out the door in those days, it all depended on what they had available to keep the line moving. I parted out a 4 cylinder with an 8" already. And A/C matters for ratios. Factory put higher ratio gears into A/C cars to overcome the drag of the compressor. And most early Mustangs from 65-68 and Cougars from 67-68 had an 8", way before the II's were ever made. Good point about the L for a traction-lok. Ford also used a letter instead of a number on the door tag for a traction-lok rear. BUT, they used letters and numbers for open rears. ...
Points taken.I parted a 4cyl car too that had an 8",turns out it had a 3.00 gear, was a v8 car originally!I wasn't sure how to tell about a limited slip rear, but my '77 trucks tag had an L on it for limited slip so I figured all fords were like that.Goes to show I know jack...you know his last name!
4 banger Pintos and Bobcats came with 8s also. It depends on the year. A/C cars came with 3.55 gears. Auto cars had 3.55s as an option. Manuals only came with 3.40s unless they had A/C. M2s had 3.55 and 3.40s available with 4 and 6 bangers, but you would probably not find a T-lok. V8 M2s were common with the T-lok, but only had 3.00 gears available. Earlier Stangs and Cougars had T-loks as an option. They could also have various gears depending on the year. 3.00 is the most common though. Torinos and Rancheros often had 8" rears too. T-loks and 3.25 gears can be found. Rancheros especially had the 3.25 gears. Dave
