if anybody knows of anything that'll remove the glue from under the vinal top can you tell me i already tried paint thinner and it doesnt work thanks
There was an earlier post where someone stated a solvent that worked. You may want to check the archives. I ended up sanding the roof and it was a good thing I did. There was a lot of pitting. I used a rust inhibitor prior to primering just to control the pitting so I wasn't looking at another repaint down the road. I'm not replacing the top. The roof metal is likely pitted if there was any rot from the old roof so check it well, and there is a possibility that it wasn't completely finished from the start when they flag a car as getting a vinyl roof on the line.
Wes is correct about the conditions of the roofs that were slated for vinal tops. It's rare to find one that does not have rust starting under the old vinal top. In every case where we have removed a vinal top, it was in order to prepare a car for paint. Depending on how much glue is on the roof, you could go through a heck of a lot of solvents trying to remove it that way, and still not get it all off. That stuff is TOUGH. We sand the glue off with 80 grit sandpaper on a DA sander and then sand it again using 180 grit to remove the 80 grit marks and then prime the roof for repainting.
damn that sucks ive been sanding it and oops i got alot of paaint off so i guess i gotta paint my car a different color i'm glad i did this now
