I just installed a remanufactured Motocraft 2150 2V carb on my 302 v8. The old kick down rod doesn't fit onto the pin where it is supposed to now. When I compared the old carb to the new I found everything to be the same except that there is a rivet joining two levers together that move independantly on the old carb. The assembly I'm speaking of is what throttles the engine (you can rev the engine outside the vehicle by pushing on it). One lever connects to the throttle and the accelerator pump. The other lever has an adjustable screw and connects the kickdown rod to the accelerator pump and afore said rivet joins it to the throttle lever. So I'm not sure if I have the wrong kickdown rod since we swapped engines a while back or if my old bud "made it fit" on the old carb by removing the rivet. Is this rivet necessary? I installed the carb without the rod connected and the engine seems to run fine. What does the kickdown rod do exactly and how critical is it? Should I A) remove the rivet B) find a new rod that fits or C) modify the existing rod with an extension piece. Can anyone help me out?
Kickdown Black sun 302, I had a problem like that when i put the 302 in my Maverick. With mine the problem was it wouldnt reach the throttle on the carb. That probably doesnt help you. I do know that the kickdown engages the transmission to shift when you are pushing the throttle the kickdown pushes the lever it is fastened to on the trani. When mine wasnt hooked up it wasnt shifting properly. Hope this helps. 74Maverick Thom
Naa, been running the 77 without one for more than 3 yrs now. Just pull the shift lever down if you want to go.
has anyone extended or mod. a kickdown rod to work on a holley 600 setting on a 289 eldo. intake? if so what did you do? thanks...frank...:bananaman :bananaman
dennis, i see you converted yours from a kickdown to a pulldown. was this very expensive? ...frank...bananaman
kickdown To use a kickdown with my Victor Jr. intake (waaay taller than stock) I had to extend the end of the kickdown rod about 2 1/2" and then tweak the rod a little bit to get it working just right. Edelbrock sells a kit for this which consists of a short bit of flat stock with two holes drilled into it and a self tapping screw. I didn't know that's all it was when I ordered it or I wouldn't have spent the $10.00 or whatever it cost.
most people once they boost their horsepower find they dont need the kickdown and eliminate it....especially if they install a shift kit which usually elimnates it anyhow
ok. I'm going to remove the rivet joining the two levers. Doesn't seem to make sense that it's there anyway. Why join the two levers when the orginal manufacturer would have just made it a single piece if it's suppose to operate that way? Because of the rivet, the adjusting screw on the kickdown lever is pointless because there isn't any movement to adjust. I think it's a screwup. If I'm wrong, it no big deal to reattach it... thanks for the input everyone
yeah i must admit we like the pull down feature. the car actually DOES downshift when going real slow and with all that horsepower and torque, it really has no need to downshift on upgrades or passing.
how hard is it to take it of the tranny I`m getting ready to pull the engin and its my first time so I want to get as much crap out of the way as I can
