hey guys well i just took my mav out for the first time since i got it and it ran real good except it has a knocking noise under the seat when i put it in gear so i got under there while my son put it in drive and when i touched the end of the transmission where it connects to the drive shaft it stops can u please tell me what i need to do to get it to stop doing that. thanks
you might not want to drive it any more untill you check this out very well-first did you mean it stops when you just touch the end of the trans? you could possibly have a loose tail housing or a worn out tailshaft bushing, the yoke might be bent or a u-joint could be worn out, also check the trans mount and cross member for loose bolts. good luck-keep us advised.
I'm thinking you just have a bad universal joint. Maybe it seems like the knocking stops when you put your hand on it, but in reality your hand is just deading or muffling the knock. Just a thought. ray
when i first got the car and drove it home i heard the noise and thought u joints so they are new if i put just a small amount of pressure on the very end of the transmission it stops the noise untill u let go
also check if you have a bad motor mount, if so it might be raising the engine enough to make a sound. you know sometimes sounds travel and it might be from another place, I've had this happen several times.
when you hold it it doesnt make the noise...? but when you let go it makes the noise? is it a continuous noise or it makes the noise only when putting into gear and only when touching the driveshaft? i think i am lost
To me it sounds like your transmission mount is broken. They are similar to a motor mount in that they are rubber and steel. It should be underneath where the crossmember for the tranny is located. $7.99 at Advance Auto Parts. Any parts store would surely be able to get them. Seth
thanks ill give the tranny mount a try. can i change it without taking the transmission out maybe just jacking it up alittle?
You should. But not much. You will be jacking the entire engine/tranny up and it will be hinged at the motor mounts. Take the drive shaft out and check your U-joints while you are at it. Grease them too if they have the fittings. You may be better off loosening the motor mounts, I am not sure. Seth
I dont quite think a u-joint can make noise unless the car is rolling, therefore he probably isn't going to be putting his hand on it and stopping the noise. I would more likely think a loose or broken tranny mount.
just wanted to say thanks for all your help and that this is a great web site. now if it ever quits snowing im going to get it back in the basement and fix it ill let u guys no what i find out about it
