Well fellow racer's, had a fun weekend. Was a two day event with a pro/noe and street combo, on Saturday. Also the winner of that would run the winner of Super-Pro, for 2000.00 purse. Don't care for combo's because of the fact that footbrakers, must go against the electronic equipped super dooper guy's. Being my Fairmont is in process of chassis work, and I grenaded the back-up Mustang engine, thought I would crew for Todd and the Maverick. Alas, deer season fast approaching, Todd could not get off work Saturday, so I asked him if he cared if I drove the mighty Mav. Being a good son, he said, sure. Now, I have never driven it in any race or tnt, before, so this was going to get interesting for an "old" racer like me. The Fairmont 347, runs 6.40's to 6.60's in the 1/8th, but the Mav 408, runs 5.80's to 5.90's and launche's like a rocket, on those 32in Hoosier's. It had rained that morning and the track was looking good but knowing the moisture would still be a factor until more cars got some rubber down and dried out the launch pad, figured I would get used to the beast by doing a soft launch. Yeah, right. Did a crappy burnout and staged, tree come's down and schazam, she slam's my head into the seat and smoke's the tire's. I pedal it and it goes to the left and then the right. Now I am mad and shove the right foot into the floorboard. What a adrenalin rush, feel's like a jet fighter taking off. Rt was red and the ET was an embarrising 6.31, second run was better but still disappointing to me, at 6.29. Time for eliminations and being it was late and cooler guessed on a dial of 6.25. Drew a street truck of 10.50 caliber, got the burnout down now and stage in the right lane. My God, the truck leave's and I have a 4 second nap before my lights start down. Concentrating on the top of the third bulb, I slam the pedal to the metal and "wooie" the Mav rip's the front end into the air and start's down the asphalt. She is going straight as an arrow and I get a good gear change on the glide. am thinking this is a fast run but keep the foot pressed through floor board. pass the truck like it was standing still and decide to back out of it for safety sake, on the ET. Damn, his win light come's on and I new what that good run and my not using the brake's along with lifting, had done. 6.01 @ 117 and done for the night. Todd got there late and ran the race of champs, for all winner's in the season. Big red bulb come's on and he put's the Mav to rest for the night. More on Sunday's points race, in another post.
It's really hard to drive a car well with no seat time. At least now you know what to expect, next time.
I wish I could have been there for that. lol I always enjoy your stories, in person and on the board.
