Installed all pieces to shifter when car is turned off shifter works fine, start engine and shifter does not want to go into any gear. Netural safety not hooked up yet so I put shifter in drive and started car. Shifter worked good car went forward in drive. Then I tried to shift back into reverse and I had no reverse at all. Are the two problems related or is there multiple problems?

It appears that the shifter lockout rod is not adjusted properly.

Do you have a shop manual?

Have you had the pan or valve body out? What about the shift lever? Make sure the manual valve lever is lined up with the valve itself, or you will have the exact problem that you describe.

The pan was dropped to put the kickdown linkage in. I may have to go back and eleminate kickdown and just shift manually.

It sounds like the manual lever is not seatd in the manual valve. This will cause EXACTLY the problem that you are describing. Do you know what the manual valve is, and where it is located? It is the valve that slides into and out of the valve body and it looks like a cylinder with several grooves cut into it. It will slide into and out of the valve body very easily, and if you have to tilt the valve body at all when installing it in the trans, this valve will slide back into the valve body, away from the lever that is supposed to ride in the main groove. I finally had to take a long plastic tie wrap and loop it around the valve while installing the valve body so I could keep pressure on the manual valve to prevent it from moving while I was installing the valve body. Once it was installed, I removed the plastic tie, and this solved the problem.

Thanks for the help that was the problem it must have fallen back the first time valve body was out. So today I drained the pan took out valve body and pushed rod back to where it should be put tranny back together fired car up. Put itin to reverse and it when in so now I have all my gears.
