I found an old Autotrader from '79. Lots of good deals to be had. I personally like the "best offer Shelby"...
They were German Fords, I thought they had them in the US. On a side note, the guy around the corner from me has one the was in a Gumball Rally, or a Cannonball, it's all lettered up and everything, full out race car. It's amazing what Mavericks were selling for in 1979, in the mid 80's you could still buy a decent one for $500, but it may have been a little rustier than in was in 79. I knew of a guy that bought a 68 Shelby GT500 for $27500.00 in about 1989, everyone thought he was nuts.
they were available in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Capri#Mercury_Capri and all of them were built in my hometown there was a company named Mako that fitted american 302 v8 engines and toploader 4 speeds in these cars - unfortunately, only 50 of them were ever built. they're sort of rare...
Too funny. Local Hamilton stuff. Used to visit Fletcher Bros (Shelby ad) regularly for my first Mav build. Fletchers used to own Cayuga drag strip. I used to set up 340 six pack for his brother on his Pink Challenger. Memories....
Those Capri's were really abundant around here. I used to see them all the time at the auto auctions with my dad, when I was a boy/teenager. Unfortunately, they were rust prone vehicles. Even at my young age then, they were starting to rust. They were tipically 1-2 hundred dollar cars. The Capri's and the Vega's were in the same boat. I never could appreciate the looks of the Capri, as a kid. I really do like them now, though.
I remember test driving one of those capris with my Dad. Too small for the 4 of us though. Bought a Cougar instead.
Secretary at my High School had a red one. Her son and I were good friends. We used to run the crap out of that car. Very Fun Car.
A friend of mine had a real nice solid Capri, it quit one day on the way to college, we pushed it into the parking lot of the mental hospital, and left it there, and we were both going to school for automotive...I think it had a v6, 2.8l ??
There is a guy here in town that has about 6 of them. One of them is a rally car with racing suspension, fender flairs and the whole bit. I believe it was brought back to the states by a Soldier and he ended up with it. They are very cool cars. I have not been able to talk him out of one of them yet.
Ahhhh yes, the Mercury Capri or the Mercury mate to the Mustang II. 2.8 V6 Black motor. They were painted Black so they were referred to as that. They ran pretty good but even better after it came out of Steve Kanuka's Speed Shop. Had a black one that could and did pull the front tires off the ground in 2nd but it wasn't quite stock. not only the good old days they were the funnist days. :bananaman
