I recently came upon a Maverick that is close to my price range and have been toying with the possibility of buying it. I have never owned my own vehicle or insurance as I am driving a car owned and insured by my parents. I am just wondering where would be a good place to get insurance for the car, and how would I know the proper value to claim it on the insurance policy. Also, would it be better to do a classic car insurance (Grundy, Haggerty) or go with a standard insurance company like Progressive/State Farm etc. The car in question is said to be a 74 Maverick 302 GT that the owner claims to be a drivable project. It would a weekend vehicle as I would continue driving my current vehicle to and from school and work. Wouldn't want to risk damaging a nice classic on a college campus.
Haggerty/Grundy/JC Taylor for the insurance...If you are unsure about value to place on it. Get it appraised. Agreed upon value collector car insurance is the way to go with a classic. Regular insurance will never get you what you need/want if the car gets wrecked/stolen. Good luck!!!
Thanks for the tips, I will have to look into the age thing, I am 22, will be 23 in January. Also, where would I go or who would I contact to get an appraisal?
Which is fine, I would still keep my moms '97 Malibu as my daily driver, the Maverick would just be something to work on and drive on really nice days/weekends.
Call your insurance rep. Mine let me set my own insurance amount, then gave me a monthly cost. As I do more to it, I can call and get the coverage amount raised. Of course It will cost more. I can also change it to "storage" coverage for the winters months. Mine is just regular Allstate coverage.
If your doing that, make sure you have an agreed amount, in case of a total loss, you don't want to find out they are going to give you $200.
My understanding is that the car in question is not the only car you own or have insured. I am not completely sure that having it on one policy and then driving you moms car that is on her policy will fly. You will want to call them and get that verified first. Glenn
Check with a Hagerty or Grundy agent. There are numerous restrictions with classic car insurance. Vehicle must not be used as a daily driver, must be kept inside, you must have another vehicle insured . etc.
Yeah, everybody here is right. I bought my 74 Comet GT in May; once I got it drivable, I called Haggerty and they wouldn't insure it, 1 because it was a daily driver and 2 because it was only kept under a carport. It has to be in an enclosed structure. So for now, I just drive it around town and use my wife's car for longer drives.
