Went to a cruisin in the mav saturday nite. Keokuk IA is about 45 miles away and I hadnt been to that cruise since 98. Drove the car though I hate to with this being the deer capital of the world, and it made the trip in fine fashion. When we pulled in about half the people there immediately walked over to the car, I could hardly open the door to get out. My eye was drawn to a 56 Cad deville restomod that was fabulous. I wanted to go over and see it but I couldnt get away from the people asking questions, like is it for sale? Do you know where any are that are for sale? were asked over and over thru the nite. One guy said he just sold his mustang cause he was tired of the stang crowd and was now intent on getting a maverick after seeing mine. As usual in this part of the country, mine was the only Mav. Well we hung around and then went for a cruise to a DARE check presentation along the river. Came back and they state that 5 trophies would be given out. I did not know this and wondered why one guy asked me to open my hood, now it made sense. With all the muscle cars, gto's chevelles, camaros, stangs, streetrods and trifive chevies the Mav got best ride award and found out that it went to a toss of the coin on peoples choice award, in which a gorgeous 57 belair 2dr hardtop got the award. Almost 2 awards in one nite and had absolutely no expectations of any, nor do I really care. What I do care about sincerely is the attention and admiration that is being given these cars. We were ahead of our time and the rest of the world is catching up. Mavs are cool! Dan
Congratulations! Sounds like a great day! Gonna be nice when folks at the shows crowd around our Mavericks and yawn as the pass by the dime a dozens Mustang's and Camaro's .... We should get custom magnets made up for our cars "Look and enjoy but please don't touch my Maverick!"
My story is a little opposite of that. Took the new Mav to the local cruise-in at McDonalds. About 75 cars there. I saw people walking around passing out car show flyers....like normal....no biggie. I went back to my car....none laying in my car anywhere. Looked at all the cars around me...they all have flyers laying on the seat. I quess they just choose to ignore me...even though I was parked right in the middle of the show field.
Craig, I know that had to be discouraging to say the least! From the pics that I have seen, your car looks pretty good to me! I am guessing here, but I venture to say if you moved those bigger bumpers in or did a swap to the earlier stlyle bumpers, that it might get more attention. I know my 74' front bumper looks like a "cow catcher". I wonder what others have experienced at cruise ins etc. with their big bumper Mavericks and Comets vs. the small bumper Mavericks or Comets.
When I owned the 1970 Grabber.....the very first Cruise nite I went to I pulled in....and some guy came running over to me waving his arms. I thought: Cool!!! A welcoming comittee!! He walked up to my car and said, "This is for car show cars only." I told him I was a car show car. Kind of discouraging.
Currently running an iron head 306, hope to get some AFR heads this winter if the budget holds out,,, lol the budget is really taking another beating this year. Dan
Mavericks & Comets are damm good cars when properly maintained and "restified". I'm glad to see the attention that they've been getting these days, like never before...I think it's wonderful and long overdue. With that said; I also want to point out that one of the reasons (aside from ignorant prejudice) that these cars have gotten (and still get) so little respect or appreciation is that there have been so many butt-ugly piece-of-crap versions of these cars seen, so naturally, the average person does not see the "potential" of these cars as we do. Everyone I have ever met in my life knows someone who owned a Maverick at one time or other, and most owners of these cars just used them for basic transportation, abused them, and did not maintain them. They drove them right into the gound. When I was in High School back in the late '80s, the junkyards were full of Mavericks & Comets. You could easily find at least 12-15 of them at any of the mid-size to large yards. Back to my original point; most of the Mavericks that people have seen have been either major piles of crap, or boring, no-performance sedans. So when they see one now that's all tricked out & cherried-out, it really gets "grabs" their attention. No one ever appreciates my Maverick when I tell them what it is...until they see it. There is an unfortunate stigma attached to these cars. If it's not a Camaro or Mustang...or Chevelle, people think it's crap. I was so excited when I first got onto the Internet and found this site in '97. Like a kid in a candy store. This site has helped (and continues to help) these cars get restored, modified, preserved, and the respect they deserve...
Congratulations Dan it's about time Mavericks are geting the Respect they deserve. I also agree with T.L. Mavericks are Dang cool cars when there restored and maintained correctly
