Hi i was wondering if anyone could give me some advise? I finally saw a mav locally for sale and i want one real bad. It's a 76 brown light tan interior it's supposed to have 78,000 on it but it does have some rust, I don't know what motor? as it was parked and no one around the sign says 2,000 or best. yes/no what do you guys think any advise would be great. Thanks Dennis
hmmm i would call about it and get some questions in. if it had a 302 v8 with 78,000 miles and some light surface rust i would go for it if you want one real bad....but be sure you know everything about it. you will always have us here on the board if you need some questions answered!!!! good luck with it and maybe you could get some pictures on here so we could see it.......maybe help with the judging.....~Dan~
that would be great i am anxious to see what it looks like......hope you get in touch with them...good luck hope you get it for 1,500 lol... ~Dan~
The biggest thing to look at is your own skills. Paying someone else to do work is very expensive. With this in mind, you can price a car. If you have little to no experience, its worth paying more for a car in decent mechanical and cosmetic condition. Also interior parts and sheet metal are almost nonexistant in the reproduction world. Places to look for rust in these cars is the bottom of the doors (very bottom, not the outer skin bottom), where the door hinges bolt to the frame, rear inner wheel wells near the bottom, and mostly the cowl. Take a bucket, fill it with water, and dump it down the cowl vent. Then look inside and see if its leaking. If it is, the cowl needs work and chances are the floors are bad shape too. Most of all, avoid the urge to buy it just because you want it. I know, thats a tough one, it hasent worked to well for me, but it can turn an exciting project into a disastrous experience.
Thanks MAVOHOLIC, i hope to get in touch with the owner tomorrow (it's a business ph#) i'll take the dig camera then post a couple pics. Dennis
Here's one pic, sounds like the owner might come down on price how much? it's pretty clean for a michigan car ,fenders, back bumper, trunk are the bad spots it has a 6cyl. what ya think Dennis
Car looks good......but in the second picture it looks like it has been rear ended. If it has make sure to check it out good, and if it has been hit use that for your "ace in the hole" to get the price lowered. Also make sure the damage, if there is some, is something you can fix yourself without spending alot to have it done. Hope this helps some, and the car does look good Todd
What years are smog exempt in your area? In california, a 76 is not smog exempt, but a 73 is. That would play huge into my decision. Look at some of the pictures on this web site. Many like the little bumpered look of the 70-72 models. Additionally, the earlier models were less crowded with emission components. What do you want this car for? The fact that it has a 6 cyl means I wouldn't give him more than $500 period. But that is just my opinion. I would personally stay away and pick up a small bumpered 71-72 with a v8. however, your reasons for owning one could be different, and thus warrant you purchasing this one. I also agree, don't get caught up in the excitement, and think--well I can just convert to a v8 later. True-but realize, it is a WHOLE lot of work. Good luck, let us know what happens. Don't pay 2 g for that. I would say between $500 and $1000" kindly remind him it is a 76 6 cylinder maverick.
Agree 100% with Jeremy. I paid $3000 for a '77 from San Jose with 31k original on it, a 302, c4, ps, pb and working AC. No rust, spotless all over. It also had the deluxe interior, wire wheelcovers and a landau vinyl top. No way that car in the picture is worth $2k, or even close.
According to Collector Car & Truck Market Guide, A 76 Maverick is worth $1200 in #3 condition. They rate cars in 5 increments with #5 being the highest. Just guessing that's middle of the road by the pictures, the guide line should be around the $1200 mark, again, depending on your skills. Just for reference, #1- $200 #2- $575 #4- $1850 #5- $2675
Thanks guys for the info i agree too. That is too much plus after looking it over again this afternoon i think i'll wait for the right one. The owner said he had someone offer 1,400$ for it so i think it would be in the $1700-1800 range. If the body was nicer i would go for it but has pretty big dents on the roof, trunk, hood. actually where there isn't rust theres dents. I just got exited because it's the first one i've saw in about three years and it was for sale. Just hoping to be driving one by summer (search continues) Dennis
Keep an eye on it, It probably will still be there for awhile. I dont think I ever looked at a car that the guy selling, didnt already have someone offering more. Most of the time they dont.
