So yeah, the head gasket's getting worse. I went to put a Quart of oil in ole "Sandy" today and she had some milk on her (maybe Sandy just has bad mannerz?) So im gonna go and look at a 302 outt've a '78 F-150 this weekend at a local scrapyard. He wants $350 for it, says he'll pull it for me too. The guys swears its a good motor that he just recently got, and it runs smooth, but either way, im gonna give it compression test before i sink any money into it. Any advice as to what else I might need to check? Are you guys sure that a '78 302 will bolt into my '73? earlier posts indicate that's a yes, but I just want to be sure. Any advice well appreicated!

if you've got a 302 now it will fit. the motor mounts may be different but just reuse the old ones. all bolt on the same way.:)

Hmmm..... I'd look for a newer roller motor (5.0) for near that amount or slightly above first.

    re: Compression check
How you gonna do that with the engine on a stand (I presume)? Just curious.

'Read' the existing plugs (for burnt oil).

Drop the pan. Check for metallic particles - other.

(just offering up what I did in the same situation)

Yeah I would say go roller, but the balance is different, would need a new dizzy or at least the gear....not sure what else, but it may start adding up to be too much. :(
