Ok I decided to keep my 250 insted of going to a 302 someone said that i should get a adapter plate to run a 2bbl carb will this do very much, how much will it cost, and were can i get the stuff? Tony
One of the best things you can do for your stock six is to convert it to electronic ignition (duraspark, petronix, etc). It'll run smoother, have more power and get better gas mileage.
electronic ignigtion, cam upgrade, header and a 2bbl carb. in that order. a good header and carb will do you good but a larger cam will allow them to perform to their full potiential. oh yeah, cant forget the turbo and intercooler either lol
Hi Marcua56, In response to your question: I agree with the advice of adding the Duraspark II system. It's an electronically-controlled distributor with a "control box". I got mine out of a '79 Fairmont in a Pick Your Part - type junkyard. By going with this ignition system, you will get rid of the points, get more spark and better performance and gas mileage. I also went with a Holley 5200 two barrel carburetor. I bought mine from Tom at Stovebolt Engine Co. You can find him on the internet. My rebuilt carburetor with the adapter cost around $100 from Stovebolt. I have been very happy with the results after installing this carb and adapter. On my Maverick with the 250, there was enough room under the hood to install the adapter, the carb and a "reworked" stock air filter assembly. I did remove the stock hot water adapter under the carburetor during my installation. In Southern California, I have not missed the hot water adapter. If you send Tom an email and describe your car, motor, etc., he will fix you up with the correct configuration for the HW 5200 carburetor. I also installed a 6 into 1 header, along with the port divider from Clifford. In addition, I went with a single 2 1/4" exhaust and a fully-welded muffler from Summit Racing (like a brand "F-M" 40-series). I like the sound of this system. My advice, do what feels right to you - and as Dave says "Enjoy the ride" Regards, BaldEagleMav
Hi, I bought the Clifford 6-into-1 header. I didn't know any better at the time and I apparently got lucky in terms of reasonable delivery time and no "backorder" problems. This was about 4 years ago. I think AzCoupe has a header for the 250. Regards, BaldEagleMav
Hi again, Sorry, I should have mentioned that the port divider came with the header from Clifford. Regards, BaldEagleMav
Dose anyone have a link for the ignition system you guys are talking about and also the cam? Sorry im only 16 and this is my first car and first build. ToNy
check out classicinlines.com, if they dont have it no one does. fordsix.com has alot of good info too.
Hi Marcua56, The Duraspark II system is a stock Ford ignition. I think it became standard in 1977 or so. You will know it by the extra large distributor cap. If you find it in a junkyard on any Ford straight six engine, it will swap straight onto your motor. You can also buy new parts at any auto parts store. You'll need: distributor, cap adapter, cap, rotor and ignition module. New parts will cost you around $100. Just ask for these parts for a '79 Fairmont with the 3.3 liter (200 cu in) engine. There is also an option to go with a GM ignition module. I think they're cheaper than the Ford module - and they're also smaller in size = easier to find a place to mount them in the engine compartment. I'm sure someone on this forum can provide more details on this. There are also aftermarket options for the ignition module - MSD, Accel, Jacobs Electronics, etc. If you go with the Ford module, you will still need to get the wire harness that connects the ignition module to the distributor and the coil. It's very easy to disconnect and cut out of a junkyard vehicle. I went with the junkyard ignition module, distributor and harness. Then, I bought new rotor, cap and cap adapter. I probably spent $40 - $50 total. I also bought a Pertronix Blaster coil for more spark. It costs around $40 at Summit Racing (online catalog). The other option is a Pertronix electronic conversion of the stock distributor. I know there is an Ignitor I and an Ignitor II. I can't advise which is best, but I'm sure there are others on this forum who can give advice. Summit lists these conversion kits at $75 to $110. And you can add the Pertronix Blaster coil - again for hotter spark. Sorry, I cannot give you any advice on a cam. Good luck, BaldEagleMav
