I wen't to pa this spring break and got to drive my uncles 66 mustang. It had a 200 in it. Seemed to be a little stronger then my 250. I have a 75 maverick. I know the gear ratios may be set different and the weight was different but I still think his engine seemed stronger. I then looked online and saw that in 75 the 250 had 91 horsepower and the 200 in 66 had around 120 horsepower. I knew that they lowered the performance of the engines because of the emissions but didn't think it was that bad Anyway I was looking at fordsix.com and was wondering what things I can do to my engine to make it have the 155 or 145 hp that the 250's had in the earlier years. What parts did they modify or remove that I can add back on to make that type of hp? Also my uncle has another 200 from around 66 that I can use. What all can I do with what I got? What should I do first?
was the stang a stick and you`r mav an auto if so that would be some of it as far as power the 200 only makes about 77 hp at the wheels do you have smog testing if not take off the cat, egr valve, and the smog/air pump, get the head off a 78 or newer 200 or 250 and mill it .060 re set the timing (ask about that) then a 2 1/4 exhaust. That would pep things ap a nice bit
The main reason for the drop in HPs is simply because they changed the way they rated horsepower after 72. -Corbin
I knew about the change in reading horsepower but figured that on the maverick timeline setup that they had allready reworked all the numbers to the current standard of today. I wouldn't of thought that they would of left it. The 66 Mustang hardtop was only a auto with the shifter at the floor. Also some of the smog or emissions stuff has been removed before I had got the car and was never put on so thats less for me to do but I will look into removing the rest and trying what you said. Would changing to performance valves and Camshafts help at all with the performance or would that just make it tolerate a higher rpm? I was also thinking about 3 single barrel carbs but I think I will just go with the 2v aussie style intake because it would be too much work for me and I know my father wouldn't want to do that for me I went to the site for fordsixparts and they had some stuff but I was looking for a little more.
