Yesterday I was at school, and during first period I got called down to the office. They told me that my car had caught on fire, and that the fire department was there. They took me out there to see it and to open the doors to release the carbon monoxide. What I found was what I thought were the charred remains of my car. They told me that it was most likely the wiring that caused it to catch fire. They also told me that they had to pry open the hood. With some closer inspection, I found that it was only the battery, wires, hoses, and belts on the left side that were burned. The right side was virtually untouched, and the interior was completely intact. Luckily there was a security guard in the area that saw it or this might be a complete loss. Basically I have to completely rewire and replace the hoses on the left side, but I have a couple questions: 1. What is this? It was on the left side near the battery. 2. I found a mercury cougar xr7 turbo engine for $200 on craigslist. It has everything needed to run on it, including the transmission. I think it would be pretty cool to have a turbocharged 4 cylinder, and it has more hp than my 250 i6 and better mileage. It doesn't actually come with the turbocharger, but there's one for sale for $60. How hard would it be to put that engine? It seems like it would be a small engine (it's a 2.3L 4 cylinder). If it's easier to do that than replace everything, I'm going to do that. Thanks in advance for any help.
Use the search function to look up the 2.3 swap. There was a guy running one in the 11s with a holset he351w and still he got 30 mpg. Which turbo is for sale?
Sorry to hear that. Hope you find everything to replace the wireing. The voltage regulator can be picked up at any parts store.
That stinks. Good thing it was caught early. Just so you know, the battery and that regulator is on the right side of the car. I THINK Jamie was once doing the 2.3 swap.. Something about the motor mounts being a problem. It would be intresting to see the 2.3 turbo motor in a Mav/Comet tho. Are you attending North, South or Garland? I was once registered at South for about three weeks. Why did they have to "pry" the hood?
