I have a problem. . .i am forever leaving my lights on and draining the battery and would love to add an indicator to alert me that the lights are on when i pull the keys. Has anyone ever added this to their Comet or Mav?
I dont know about the buzzer,my friend put a bright red light on a buddy's car cause he has a hearing problem, its wired so when the key and lights are on the red light is off,but when the key is off and the lights are on the red light comes on.
They make a kit for $25. (2nd item on the list) http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCatal ... dlamps.htm
...i installed another dome light switch...it is wired through the parking/headlights to a (radio shack) buzzer....when i open the door with the lights on it makes a connection and buzzes... ......
I have that problem occasionally too. I have a chime circuit designed in my head that I'm going to make a reality soon, and I'll post a tech article as soon as I do it.
My DD impala has a buzzer built in to let me know when i leave the keys in the ignition. I have always had a problem with leaving the keys in there then locking myself out..... I dont have to worry about the headlights cause they turn off and on Automatically . I wish my maverick was like that...i saw an 01 impala at the junkyard i'm going to try and see if i can pillage that and get the same features on the mav
I can never park my car without turning around and checking it out. I'd see if I left the lights on ....
I'm the same. Last time I locked the door was back in 1974. Someone broke the window to steal an 8-track player. The drivers door was unlocked. I had to drive 35 miles in 5 degree weather...If someone wants to get inside your car a locked door will not stop them.
Yup, that is why I don't lock it. I don't keep anything in it that is worth stealing, at least not in sight. They look in, see a piece of junk with rotten seats and nothing worth stealing, and walk away. I wouldn't do this in a place where I was leaving it overnight. They might take my floor shifter or something. But shopping and going in for a soda after filling up, leave it unlocked and windows down, and nobody cares to even bother with it.
i have this problem massively. this is my only car without an automatic light timer to shut off the lights after the car is off. so im considering a circuit that will turn off the lights when the car shuts off. the downside to the circuit im considering is that the lights will always be on. of course that means that if i need to turn off the lights for some reason a secondary switch will need to be implemented for that purpose. once i get a better understanding of the wiring for the car (currently its a rat's nest because someone poorly hacked in a new radio) i hope to achieve this goal. on the whole though adding in a buzzer should be fairly easy. step 1 run a wire from the power to the lights to where you will place the buzzer. step 2 run a wire from the door switch that turns on the dome light. step 3 properly mix the voltages through an op-amp to achiee the necessary voltage to turn on a buzzer. step 4 power and ground the buzzer place in a good spot for hearing. done. tools likely needed for the job. Voltmeter, lots of wire, solder kit, buzzer, op-amp (id suggest a radio shack lm741 they are little workhorses http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=operational%20amplifier&origkw=operational%20amplifier&sr=1) and some resistors. if you need more help post the voltage readings from the door switch and the light switch and ill generate a schematic for you. if you REALLY want it for when you pull your keys or just kill the ignition use the cigarette lighter power.
the circuit was actually simpler if you use cigarette power. not sure if this will work thought but i am attempting to attach the Schematic as a PDF. the Buzzer needs to operate at 9v or above http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062396 is the one i suggest radio shack lm741 op-amp 3 1k ohm resistors grounding to the chassis should be sufficient.
doing it this way, if someone opens the door (driver or pass.) to get in anytime (day or night)...the buzzer will go off...the buzzer is just telling you the dome light is on...
with that schematic i posted i made an egregrious error. but it will work with the dome light as designed. and with the schematic i designed it will NOT turn on with just the door open because the voltage wont properly sum. for better explanation operational amplifiers work as mathematical operators. if the numbers dont work within the mathematical equation the end result wont be as desired. dont use the cigarette lighter though... i was thinking about a newer car that i put this mod into where the cigarette lighters are not continuous power. which is also where i hacked that circuit from. i redid quite a bit of the circuitry in that car myself because it had a seizure and half the electronics were fubar.
