I Have A 75 Comet, 302 Engine, 2 Dr, I Am Having Problems With My Steering, My Car Shakes Over 50, Any Ideal What It Might Be? I Have Installed All The Rods And Shocks New. What Is The Proper Name For A: Looks Like A Hydroulic Under The Car That Is Connected To The Powersteering Hose.
Sounds like a textbook example of a thrown belt in one of the tires. You can check that out by taking the tire off and seeing if it is flat across the tread all the way around, and looks the same all around. The hydraulic doohicky is the Power Steering Ram, it is attached to the Power Valve which has the steering column attached with a small ball-joint that slides side to side.
everything else looks good it looks like its leaking from the old boot, i heard so many names for this item, i heard it was called powersteering assist steering damper steering piston
Has it always done this or just start? I know I put on a extra leaf on my springs to get higher speeds without it starting to shake. Or do you think its something more to do with the stearing itself. Check the tie rod ends also.
Are there any squeaks or popping noises coming from the front? Does the steering wander or feel loose? If so, check tie-rods and ball-joints (upper & lower), wheel bearings. If the steering feels tight and the car tracks straight, look to the tires/rims. Are they bent, or out-of-balance? Any funny wear on the tread, such as the inner tread is worn through.
If the P/S slave cyl is leaking as you say it is.It could cause your front end shimmy as well.My granadas all did the same thing(basically the same front end)Would shimmy so bad you had to actually stop the car to make it stop.My freind would yell "Hey!!! who put a quarter in this thing??!!"Replacing the controll valve and slave solved the problem on both of them.Check all the other components first though as they have been pointed out here.Could simply be a wheel balance issue.Good luck.
Shake If you feel it through the steering wheel, it would be something up front. Check the idler arm. One going bad is a common cause for a shake at about 45 mph or so. If you are feeling it through the seat of your pants, it could be bad u-joints. I had that happen all of the sudden with a Torino I had. Bad shake at 50 mph. As I was removing the driveshaft, the u-joints fell apart! That could have been one scary ride if that happened at speed. Think big pogo stick ...
