Okay, this is an old topic, but I'm bringin' it up again.

I have come to the conclusion that my exhaust system is too quiet, but since I don't want to replace the entire system (which is in very good condition), I would simply like to install louder mufflers. Right now, it has turbo mufflers of which I have no idea of the brand. Now I don't want it "super loud", I just want it louder than it is. I don't have headers either. What muffler has a good deep sound? I don't want high frequency "cackling"...I prefer more bass tone. Oh, and I am not interested in glass-packs. Let the opinions rip...

Three chamber flows are very nice sounding. Mellow and deep. Also their new Super 40 series uses a big case like the big block mufflers and gives a nice deep tone. They tend to be quieter inside the car than the regular 40 series mufflers.

I've heard good things about the Edelbrock mufflers, quiet at idle, loud under acceleration.

but headers with glasspacks is nice. :D

actually, the headers made the glasspacks quieter and lower until you really romp on it.

Okay well what I really want it louder at idle, but not a loud ressonance in the interior. It sounds fine when I romp on it, but whimpy at idle.

Does anyone know if using a larger diameter inlet/outlet muffler reduced to the existing (smaller) pipe will make it louder?...

Don't use any crossovers or X-pipes. Mine is 1/3 as loud as a buddy's
with the same headers, mufflers and mostly the same motor.
He has no crossover, mine has an X-pipe. His sounds like glasspacks
    idling.

I already have a "H-pipe", so I'm pretty much stuck with it if I'm going to keep the existing system. I also like the little bit of low-end torque that it adds.

I really like the "tone" of my system, but like I said, it sounds puny at idle...

T.L. I have installed way to many mufflers. Those Turbos are really quiet. H pipes and x pipes typically mellow out the exhaust tone when reving the motor not much difference at idle. I would keep the H pipe. If you want some louder mufflers I would recommend the Ravin 33 series or set of spin techs. Also if you have manifolds change over to headers. I would also add that the cam makes a big difference at idle. Loud is good(y)

the 2 chamber flows are the only way to go. the three chambers sound great too, but you won't get the volumn your looking for. Be careful though, two chamber flows on a v8 mav with unrestricted exhaust (no cats) can be loud. Make sure you don't run dumps.

Two 1973 LDO Mavericks (one 4 Drag one 4 driving like Mad on the roads :) ) also have a 75 6cyl Stock! Ok, well sort of Stock :P
everyone is right about the X-pipe it will make it quiter and will cut any cackling down for sure.... but since you have an H-pipe what i just said has not relevance to what you want to know :p

but i would suggest a turbo type muffer not a chambered one. yes chambers are louder but if you don't want a cackling sound don't get one. All they do is cackle.. i have had 3 differant kinds of chambers muffers and they all "cackled" i don't get one unless your running a X-pipe. no i know you have turbos already but it would be good to know what you have brand you have on their so i can compare.

don't get magnaflows if you want loud... i know i have those one another car... very good muffer and very steath if you ask me.. but loud they are not! the only thing i can suggest is dynomax ultraflow, which is louder then their super turbo... i have had both of those as well on my car... they make more of the low droning sound if anything.

pesonally i like a sound where people can't tell what muffer i have. flowmaster is a distinct sound that everyone has... i do run them on one of my cars but with the X-pipe they don't sound so typical.

good luck let us know what you end up getting.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry for making this a two-part question, but I'd still like to know if anyone knows whether or not using a larger diameter inlet/outlet muffler reduced to the existing (smaller) pipe will make it louder(?)...

several month back I helped my wifes cousin add some different tips to his mustang gt,... I didnt think it would make any real change, I was really surprized the difference in sound just adding a larger tip to his exhaust.everything else on the set up was stock, he went to a larger exhaust tip and it made it noticably louder. might be something to consider if your system will allow it.
