My uncle and I added a new addition to our Maverick/Comet family. We went together and bought a 1975 Comet GT.

We made the 570 mile round trip from VA to SC yesterday and checked the car out and brought it back home on the the car trailer.

Here is a few details on the car. It is an original GT car. I bought a Marti Report for the car before we went to look at it. The car also came with lots of the original paperwork including the window sticker, bill of sale, warranty card and owners manual.

According to the Marti Report there were only 2,163 Comet GT's built in 1975. It is Bright Yellow with black bucket seat interior. It has been converted to a small bumper car.

The car has 78K original miles. It had it's original paint on it until two years ago when it was repainted in the original color with a nice base/clear paint job and new GT stripes applied. The rear tail panel and hood stripe was redone too, but was done in gloss black. He also added a Grabber rear spoiler at the time of the repaint.

The car was originally an automatic, but the owner we bought it from swapped the car to a 4 speed using a brand new David Kee wide ratio top loader 4 speed and Hurst Competiton Plus shifter.

He also rebuilt the original motor and added an Edelbrock Performer intake (painted Ford blue), 500 CFM Edelbrock 4V carb, M/T black finned valve covers, chrome air cleaner, Champion aluminum radiator and electronic ignition. The motor is mostly stock except for a bump in compression and a small cam. He also added Hooker headers with 2 1/2" exhaust with Flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. The car has 3.25 gears with an open diff.

He also redid the interior. He swappped the low back buckets for a set of '70-'72 high backs and had them done in the original pattern but instead of comfort weave material in the inserts he used suede. He put in new carpet and headliner. The car retains it's original uncreacked dash pad.

He also did a really nice job of modifying a '89 Mercury Sable console for the car. It has 3 cup holders, an armrest and he added water temp and oil pressure gauges to the front of the console. It has a light at the rear of the console and he also added a power port to it so that you can charge your phone, etc.

He also added a small tach, aftermarket 4 spoke steering wheel and a NOS AM/FM 8 track stereo. He sent the original deluxe seat belts out and had them rewebbed.

The car has a set of 14x7 American Racing Torque Thrust 2 wheels that has had the spokes painted a graphite color. The tires are 235/70/14 in the rear and 215/70/14 in the front. The car has front disc brakes with slotted rotors.

We spent most of the day cleaning and detailing the car. It got pretty dirty coming home as it rained the last part of the trip home. The car had a pop open '71-'73 Mustang style gas cap and we took that off and replaced it with a very nice Comet deluxe cap that I had.

Our planned changes to the car include adding an X-style crossover pipe to the exhaust, 3" K&N air filter element, chrome valve covers, a 3 3/4" chrome rimmed tach and adding a black pinstripe to the rear panel.

Also when the car was painted they removed the front Mercury crest emblem and filled the holes because the original one on the car was in poor shape. I have apretty decent one and we plan on putting that on the car and be on the lookout for an NOS one this year.

    Here are some pics.

Please ignore the 1972 plates on the car. We just stuck them on the car to drive it around the block.

The car was purchased new in MN and was Ziebarted. If you look at the under the hood pics you can see the rubber plugs. Also if you look closely at the side shot pics of the car you can see the rubber plugs showing at the bottom of each door. We plan on getting some touchup paint to put on the ones at the bottom of the doors so they can't be seen when the doors are closed.

The floor pans and under side of the car are original and extremely nice. It is very obvious that the car wasn't driven in MN winters. The car was sold in the mid 80's to someone in GA who kept it until about 10 years ago when the guy we bought it from got it.

Yeah, I emailed him right after I got it but didn't get a reply. I guess I need to call instead.

How is a 'stock' order for a 1975 Comet placed in May of 1974 and then the car isn't built until March of 1975!

Nice car and it has had a lot of tasteful mods done. Very well-executed. Now you're going to have to find a bunch of 8 tracks for road trips.

    Thanks guys!

    Thanks Paul!

I actually check on Ebay and this site daily for Comets and Mavericks. I also use a site called searchtempest.com to search all of craigslist within a 1500 mile radius of where I live. I usually search that site 2 to 3 times a week. That is how I found this car. It was listed on the Florence, SC craigslist.

The Comets are much harder to find than the Mavericks. I guess that makes sense because of how many more Mavericks were made then Comets.

The guy we got it from gave us one 8 track to go with the car. I have been looking on Ebay to pick out a few that we like for when we want to listen to something besides the sound on the Flowmasters!
