Greetings to everyone here - We registered some time back, and have perused the forum several times, but with the weather warming up we are going to begin a major attack on the Comet in the garage soon. Any suggestions and help is appreciated.
Welcome!!!! Looking forward to a father and son project in a few years myself. Hope things get going to a great start. Keep it fun. Lots of knowledge and know how here. What are the plans for the Comet? Cleaver
Howdy and As far as suggestions, I guess that depends on what you want from the car. Post some ideas of what you'd like to do and we can help you along. Of course, time spent with your kids is worth ,more than the car ever will regardless of how it turnes out. I think one of the best suggestions woul be to attend the Roundup on July 26th. You will see cars that have just about everything done that you could imagine. http://www.maverickcometclub.org/calendar_of_events.php3
Thanks for the welcome everyone. I guess to let you all know what we have ahead for us, I'll need to explain where we stand now. My son is 14, and decided that instead of getting a small car or truck when he turns 16, he wanted something different from everyone else. I suggested that we go ahead and buy a project car, and spend some time together between now and then getting her ready. We picked up a 1974 Comet 2dr at a local junk lot for $700. It still has the factory 302, factory a/c, a bench seat (that is worn out completely) and had been poorly repainted powder blue over the original medium lime yellow. (I figured the motor itself was worth half what I paid, so a pretty good deal). It has a c-4 tranny. The car runs strong, and shifts ok. She has some minor body issues and needs an interior overhaul, but we saw a diamond in the rough and took a gamble. The work we do will be weekend jobs, as I am a police officer and law school student to boot. (lengthy projects on the car will be limited until summer) In addition, this will be my first venture into restoring/rebuilding a Ford product. I have had 2 68 Camaros in the past (please forgive me guys). I'm not a gearhead, but know my way around a bit, and we're hoping we can do most of the basic stuff ourselves.
Mavaholic - As far as what he wants from the car... We have decided to basically "restore' the car but with some modifications. As this will be his first car, I'm not too keen on adding much if any more power than the original 302 already dishes out. We're planning a engine rebuild kit, but I've agreed to make it sound mean, but not necessarily make it run fast. I think he wants to make a GT clone out of it as far as appearance is concerned, including a scoop and stripe package. At the moment, we're focusing on making it run right and safely (it can look ugly until the end). We are replacing all the power steering components right now, and repairing a tranny pan leak. Everything on the car is original right down to the old rubber bushings, so a suspension overhaul and brake job are next on the list. Including a set of dual exhaust and a set of tires I put on it to replace the dry-rotted ones it came with, so far we've invested less than $1000. We intend to be thorough, but frugal.
Welcome to the board, guys. My only suggestion would be to write out a plan on paper (ie., what is the ultimate objective and what are steps are required to get there). Obviously, a budget will help determine what features to address. Post the plan where you see it every day. You found the right website for help. You'll be checking here often from our resident (and Honorable) experts with specific questions I'm sure. Good luck with the build.
Thanks, Rick We've begun a list of goals, but I like the idea of posting it up where we see it daily. Good advice...
