I'm a Ford guy primarily, I own a 95 fullsize bronco (302 HO with mass air), that's heavily modified suspensionwise, and is setting on 40" tires for offroad use, also have an 86BII with 2.9 6banger that is setting on 31's just for DD use, and light offroading, and pulling the utility trailer around. I know 302's somewhat, i've never built an engine, but have done work on em, but I AM a complete newb when it comes to carbs, i've never worked on one, so this will be a BIG learning experience for me...I've just bought a 1974 Maverick, 4DR, with a 302/auto. First off, is the auto in it a C4? If so that's a pretty stout tranny, but should be behind a 302. Also, I'll be searching your forum extinsivly on information about tuning it, and doing small, cheap power upgrades to free up lost HP. Anyways, on to the info/pics! :bananaman Was eyeing this beauty down the street for sale for a few days, I figured they wanted more than we could afford...but turns out they didnt... Story is, this 74 Maverick was originally owned by this elderly couple's uncle. He bought it new in 74...and then when he died a year ago, this elderly couple recieved it. Now, they're selling it. 2 P.O.'s, and it's in meticulous shape, you coudl tell old people drove it...The dash/interior is perfect, no cracks or wearing even on the leather interior besides the door handles are broke off..i'm guessing this is a common problem due to the owners wouldnt have been beating on it, I'll find some replacments for it. It's a 4DR, with a 302/auto, 2V IIRC. Bright red with chrome on it, black top, VERY sharp, and a steal IMO for 500$. It runs GREAT, acceleration is wonderful, and shifts really smooth, no clanks, bangs, or creaks from the vehicle. It was probably grannied for all 73k original miles on it :thumbup The brakes feel a lil loose, it doesnt stop as fast as my bronco did on half ton axles with 37's...so, i'm guessing it's low on brake fluid, needs a new master cylinder, needs to be adjusted, something..but even then that shouldnt be too expensive of a fix, it brakes fine, but I feel there's alot of room for improvement. Well, here i am talking so much without pics, i just walked down the block with new batteries in the camera (it was dead when i test drove) It's got a few lil dings from a door or something, paint is original, on the drivers side, rear quarter, on the lower part infront of the wheel, it had a lil wear n tear on the paint from driving, and rocks getting kicked up..but we can easily touch it up in that positoin..just sand it and blend it a lil and clearcoat, you dont notice it unless you're down that low anyways... Very pleased about it, we're picking it up on fri because they want Cash for it, but it's reserved for us. Can't wait to get this beast in the driveway :bananaman
Welcome to the board. She looks like a real beauty. Gotta love those old grandma and grandpa cars. I'm sure you will have a ball with it.
wow, you got a great deal. how did you keep from grinning ear to ear when you bought thatp.s welcome to the board.
Gheez, must be a ton of active members on this forum to get that many posts in such a short time 500 seemed like a great deal for me, the leather is in better shape than our 97 GMC 2500 Suburban's! It looks like it got all the premium options from hte factory, red paint, the leather, the AC (WORKS GREAT, has a York compressor), all that jazz 4dr...well, i wasnt looking for this vehicle, just happened to look at the for sale ad in the window when i was driving down the street, and my jaw dropped at the price ...figured they'd want at least 2k for it in that condition, so i test drove it, and was surprised as hell, only thing wrong with it is the door handles, other than that..it's great, just needs to be detailed inside, and it'd be good to go. I like the 4door for functionality, I'm used to a fullsize bronco and a b2, which make it horribly hard for someone that's larger than normal to get in, especially when my bronco is sitting 13" higher than stock on 235's , so, since this will be basically just to cruise around town, and to hit the highway with, and save wear/tear on my bronco, and get alot better gas mileage (8mpg), 4dr doesnt bother me, not gonna be dragging it or anything I love the fact it has a 302/C4, C4's are dime a dozen, and 302's are a penny a dozen, i could pick up 3 70's 302's for like 200$ from a guy i know..so, if i ever have issues, i shouldnt have a problem replacing the drivetrain, also..upgrades are always fun evilsmile My current restore project for the past couple weeks was supposed to be a '46 4dr Nash (weighs 2800lbs), and dropping a 500caddy bigblock in there, with a turbo400 behind it, a chevelle 10bolt rear end, and a mustang 2 front end (narrowed)...this purchase may put that off, just because this is a running project, i wont be taking it to "Perfect", but it'll get gone through to ensure it stays running well Any of you guys have any cheap/free upgrades to these? Carb tricks/tweaks? intake modifications/dremeling, etc?
to the board. What a great find! Isn't it great to find a deal, when you're not looking? I got my 74 Comet 4dr 302 for $200 when it found me 3 years agao....Way to score....
