Hello, I just wanted to say HI, I am excited to start reading this forum for tips and ideas to apply to my first car. It was a 74 maverick and it is currently in a barn in Iowa. its been sitting for about 20years and I plan on pulling it out to Missouri where I live to start a restoration project!

I did some extensive body work on it in the 80's when I was driving it, and now that old work is very apparent and will need to be redone. I am planing on replacing the sheet metal with used parts I can find around the web. then Pulling out the seats and carpeting and replacing that also. The Mice have been living in it and living quite happily I am sure. Then I would tune up the motor and brakes which were working fine in 1990!

Thats about it, I don't know that i can do this in a weekend, I am am thinking about possibly 2 years. I would be better off buying a similar one that is in better shape but then it wouldn't be my first car!

Like I said I will be reading, and learning, but if you have any hints suggestions let me know.

I will post some photo soon

    Thanks
    Chris

Welcome to the board. Being that it was your first car makes it pretty sentimental. You can only have 1 first car.:Welcome:

Thanks, it being 500 miles away, all I can do is read and make a list. I am hoping it is going to be in good enough shape to restore.

[IMG] Be sure to check all of your wiring before hooking up a battery! Mice just love to eat wire insulation! Glad you're finally getting to work on your car again! :thumbs2:

I wouldn't get too discouraged about it's condition until you pull it out and give it a really good soap and water cleaning. Mine sat outside in all kinds of weather for 15 years and I was able to work with it. You have a plus considering it is stored in a barn (y)

Reading about rust on frames and structural parts. How often is this a concern to a cars safety? I know there is a lot of rust on the body. I would imagine there is a point when the car just isn't salvageable. Any one have a frame that was to rusty to repair?
