My 19 year old and I have just started sorting out this car. It originally was an inline 6 that the previous owner swapped a 302/C4 into but didn't finish. I have to double-check the ID numbers but I think the 302 is a '68. Engine build date stamp is 8E23B, but we need to check the block casting #. We hope it is an early 302 as the c.r. was higher on the early motors. New headers are in the trunk and it has an Edelbrock manifold and Holley 4bbl. It has been sitting a long time as an abandoned project. Engine was stuck but we coaxed it loose with a mixture of PB-Blaster and Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and working the crank back and forth with a breaker bar/socket until it turned 360 degrees. Primed the oil pump, installed the starter and spun it over today without plugs to get the excess elixir out of the cylinders. It's missing a few parts but we've made a list. I ordered an E-Bay HEI distributor/coil with Accel plug wires for $70 shipped because it has an obsolete points distributor with the coil missing anyway, so this was the most practical way to upgrade. The carb is new, but no hot-air provision on the aftermarket intake for the choke. We're going to rig up a filtered hot air supply tube to capture heat from around the headers rather than spend $60 for Holley electric choke conversion. We need a throttle cable for the V8, as the I6 cable is way too long; and we need some shifter linkage pieces. Replaced door hinge pins/bushings today. We'll post some pics soon. DAW
Welcome to the site, from Eastern N.C. You are right about the early 302's. According to the old books, the pre-70 302's had approximately 60 more horsepower, than the post 70. You can use the six banger cable. Just loop it, between the bracket and the fire wall. Also, I have always loved the old Datsun Z cars.
