i was trying to start my car up the other day and as i turned the key i herd a loud pop like a back fire in the carb and after the pop there was smoke coming off the engine that smelled like oil. I thought it might have been the coil because the coil had a small crack in it. I also thought it might have been the coil because the coil had oil all over it and i thought this might have came out of the coil because it is filled with oil. now that i have replaced the coil i am still not getting a spark from the coil to the distributor. I do know there is power going to the coil because the wires spark if u disconnect them wile the key is on.

so i was wondering if anyone might know if there might be another reason why the coil is not putting off a spark. Or why there was a loud pop.... please post your suggestions. Thanks

P.S. (i just put in a brand new voltage regulator and started selinoid)The only thing else i can think of is that the distributor might have went bad.

Does your car still have the stock points ignition?

If you have voltage to the positive side of the coil. Check the adjustment on the points and inspect the contacts for evidence of arcing, you could possibly have a shorted condenser.

If you have power to the coil then your resistor wire is fine. It sounds like your condensor went bad and/ or your points are not opening.

No need to change the whole distributor. Just check the points and condenser or upgrade to a Pertronix.
