OK here is what I have going on NOW. I have the Comet in hand. I also have no title. I have done limited research on the VIN in the state of SC; there are no leins on the title and the last registration appears to be 2000--meaning its till in the system as far as the state is concerned so I can't just go to GA and get a bill of sale and then a title here. After talking to the state DMV it seems that the way they want me to do this is send a form for an unclaimed vehicle to them then they send a registered letter to the last known address (the address on the automotive registration I have is now in another persons name). I know that the car was at a foreclosed on HUD home in Columbia, SC with no tags and no owners when the fellow I got it from took possesion two years ago. When the letter comes back to me as "no forwarding address" then I have to go to the county clerks office and give them the letter unopened and they can issue a new title for the vehicle.

    Sounds iffy and complicated.

I've tried contacting the former owners with no luck. I've even called the insurance company on the insurance card I found with the registration. The couple whos name is on the card haven't been in their sytem for over four years.

In order to send this car to Australia to have the rack and pinion and bolt in three-link done I need a clean title.

Any ideas on how to make this process easier? :49:

    I have the same problem
    72 Comet GT...
An older gentleman had it, sold it to my buddy, (race car for both of them)
It sat for around 5 years, I bought it... got it almost ready, and no title yet
I dont get to talk to my buddy much anymore, and he's a tad on the lazy side about contacting the guy he got it from. So I prob won't get a title that way
Any ideas on how to do this in Arkansas would be great

In Georgia, you can get a salvage title. That's a title you can get after getting a car road worthy. You get it inspected and you can get a title. I'm not sure IF SC has something similar and I'm not sure it would work since it was titled as recently as 2000.

I could make the sacrifice and let you send one of my '73s to Austrailia. They are both titled and insured.

I don't think we have the salvaged title thing here unless you get it from a junkyard and they have the title

I'll probably call the DMV again Tuesday and confirm a typical time frame with them. I think that will be the best way in this deal. I'd like to get the thing done and have the car on a boat by Mid-August so we can get the rack on the Market by January.

LOL Hawko I'd be more than happy to do that If you gave ownership (and the titles) over to RRS. :D

go to hemmings motor news, there are places that can get you a title for about $150. I of 2 guys locally that done this, one on a 68 camero that came from Indiana. you send them the vin and they send you a registration from Alabama I think because that is what they use. You take it to your court house and file for a title in your state. Here they send a policeman out to lookat the car and sign a paper and you are set. Like I said I know of 2 personally that have had sucess.

Andy get the DMV to run the vin for you to get last owners name...go to a car lot...like the one I work at and secure a power of attorny sheet. fill it out, get the last OWNER to sign it and you can get a new title cut. you will also need a lost title sheet filled out. then you can get a new title cut.

Jerry, Jeff heads up the USA side of this company:

    http://www.rrs-online.com/index.htm

He is sending a Comet to Austrailia to have the rack-and-pinion steering and the new three-link rear suspension made to fit a Mavericks and Comets. It is going to be awesome to have top-notch handling in a Maverick without going to a Mustang II suspension - if you want to spend the bucks.

Thanks for the kind offers but the Comet is sitting in my side yard and...well...I've grown fond of the brightly hued battle scared hulk. I guess its like that when you buy any old Ford. Can I get an Amen?

As for the Alabama title, a title is still on file here in SC for the car. Were I in GA or North Carolina I mightb e OK. But since I'm here in the great state of South Carolina--and I know the car is from here--I'm kinda boned on the Out of state title thing.

I've looked into these guys www.broadwaytitle.com but as I said I don't feel comfortable spending $139 for a title when SC still has it on file.

Yep, its getting the whole enchilada, and rumor has it that we're putting an Aussie 290 hp 5.4 under the "bonnet" and a five or six-speed behind that. That is of course still up in the air.

We wanted the three-speed floor shift car becasue it is a "worse case scenario" for rear steer rack fitment with that Z-bar where it sits. More on all this later.

I have the same problem with the '71 I bought from Texas last spring. However I DO know the last owners name. But I can't get a hold of him. It doesn't matter because Oklahoma won't allow ANYTHING without a title!
